Orca Whale Watching & Wildlife Tour: Pre-book & Save $10

Victoria is the gateway to the Puget Sound, Gulf Islands, and San Juan Islands, and is home to three resident pods of Orca Whales. This tour is designed to take you as up close and personal as permitted with the whales and sea life as they explore their natural feeding grounds along the shores British Columbia's rugged coastline. You'll board a motorcoach for a short transfer over to the whale watching vessel departure point. The vessels are equipped with restrooms, and offer covered as well as open viewing locations. As you travel to the viewing location, be sure to enjoy the majesty of the coastline and mountains surrounding you. This area is a playground for many of the world's wealthiest yacht owners, and multi-million dollar yachts can often be seen cruising through the waters. Note: Orcas are regularly seen, but not guaranteed. This tour is not recommended for pregnant women and people with back problems. Price reflected on NCL.com is inclusive of the $10 Pre-book savings.

Rough Ride
We took a whale watching excursion in Juneau that was far better than this one. The boat ride was extremely rough - we had several people getting seasick, which wasn't helped by the awful fumes from the boat itself. We never saw any orca whales, just one hump-back whale. Our time and money would have been better spent in the town of Victoria.

Meh...
We thought this would be more exciting than we had hoped--it was okay. But the weather (it was August 17, 2012) was beautiful. The boat ride out to where the whales were was MUCH longer than we had anticipated--probably 90 minutes or more? and the water was choppy so numerous people were getting ill (definitely bring some dramamine or use a scopolamine patch). Finally, we did see several whales (whether they were all the same one or different ones--I was not sure). Also saw a whole colony of sea lions. Then we had the boat ride back (sleeping through the ride back definitely made it feel shorter!). The boat itself, if you sitting against the windows, did not seem to have much air circulation, so sit closer to the aisle if you are prone to feeling stuffy and cramped. In retrospect, would probably have opted for one of the other excursions.

The guys in the group sailing together decided to try this excursion and we could not have had a better time. It was cold and the seas were rough but within 15 minutes of clearing the sea wall we were within mere feet of a pod of orcas, including a very large male, several femails and one baby. Our pictures of orcas surfacing with the city of Victoria in the background are priceless. The huge male surfaced only 15 feet off the side of the boat. The trip to the lighthouse off the coast of Vancouver Island was rough but well worth it to see the sea life and one of the most beautiful sunsets I have ever seen. This one is only for those not prone to seasickness and dress very warmly. There was time to walk to the inner harbor in Victoria for dinner at one of the local pubs.

We did not have any luck with seeing whales on this excursion. While the boat tried going to several locations no whales were spotted anywhere during our time on board. We did get to see seals and bald eagles however. The boat was small and had room on the front and back outside for patrons. Inside were benches you could sit on but no room to move around. It was extremely loud if you were outside while the boat was traveling and not very quiet inside either. We did not feel we got our money's worth from this excursion.
