San Juan City Tour

Enjoy a guided drive through one of the most beautiful cities in the Caribbean with its 17th century architecture and historical buildings. You will have the opportunity to stroll around the grounds of the biggest fortification built by the Spaniards in the New World on your self guided visit to Fort San Cristobal. Come see its Main Plaza, "Garitas" watchtowers and authentic mortal balls. Re-board your bus and continue your guided tour to the New City, which will take you to the Condado District, filled with high-rise condos and luxury resorts. A stop is made at one of the beautiful beaches and the Capitol Building for pictures. Return to Old San Juan where you'll visit the famous Plaza Colón. Here you may choose to stay to explore the local surroundings and enjoy some shopping or return to the ship. Take a step back in time and enjoy this captivating journey through history. Note: We recommend you wear comfortable walking shoes, bring a hat and sunscreen. Due to walking required at the fort, the activity level is substantial. The fort is not wheelchair accessible. There is a steep ramp to access the fort (about 65 paces one way). The first level features the barracks, gun rooms, and video presentation. The next level requires walking up another steep ramp (about 35 paces one way). Accessing the third level observation ports for the best views of the city requires going up another steep ramp (about 65 paces one way). Some of the stops are unguided allowing guests to browse on their own. Traffic in old and new San Juan can be congested. Alternate routes are implemented whenever possible. The stops are unguided allowing guests the leisure to browse on their own. Optional drop off in Old San Juan allows guests to browse, shop and return on their own to the ship.

Good Overview of the City
Nice tour through the city with a stop at a beach and the old fort. Tour guide was very knowledgeable about the local history. Can be dropped off near the shopping, 3-4 blocks from the dock.

The San Juan tour guide was funny and sweet. "Okay guys take 15 AMERICAN minutes"
However, what I didn't like is that the tour was rushed, we didnt get to enjoy the beach yet we spent an HOUR on the fort.
However, if you like educational trips, this is the perfect excursion for you! I like educational and relaxing excursions...meaning excursions where you learn and get to relax on a beach or something!

Boring....
This tour was pretty boring and we had a young cute tour guide! Wished we had taken the tour with the tour of the Bacardi distillery especially when we saw them return laughing, having fun and drinks in hand!!

In some ways this was a good tour in that we got to see quite a large area of San Juan but there were some parts that were just average to poor. You definitely do not end up with enough time to adequately walk through the Fort, if all you want to do is explore Fort San Cristobal, I would tend to recommend simply walking there on your own (assuming no small children) and exploring it at your own pace. It was interesting to see the various parts of San Juan though, I was not expecting such modern buildings and resorts.

This tour is a great way to learn about the dynamic city of San Juan. Our guide was energetic, knowledgeable and provided a great narrative to our sights. The first stop was the beautiful, marble capitol building. We were able to go inside and on all three floors to take pictures. The second stop was a beautiful beach. The last stop was the fortress. We wanted to spend more time at the fortress, so we didn’t take the bus back to the ship and spent two hours at the fortress. The fort is huge and a very interesting reminder of Spanish colonial history. We had an easy walk back to the ship. We shopped and drank an excellent espresso on the way. Some walkways at the fortress are steep and capitol building entrance is up a long flight of stairs, so these would have been hard for a mobility challenged person. This is a good way to learn about the history and current dynamic state of San Juan.

Lots of Information
We took this excursion in May 2011, Our tour guide JR. was fabulous. I learned a lot of history while we drove through the Streets of San Juan. Our Stops for pictures were breath taking. Visiting the fortress was excellent. There is a fair bit of walking involved in this portion of the trip, but well worth it. The view from the top is indescribable. When made our way to a little shopping area, if you are a shopper you will find the people and the shops very nice. We were given the option of walking back to the ship from here, we opted to wait for the rest of the tour. Once back to the ship we headed back out on our own to investigate the harbor area, It was night time so none of the shops were open there. but there were lots of vendors on the dock. The whole day was great and I would recommend this excursion to anyone who would like to learn more of the History.
