Gold Panning, Sled Dogs & 40° Below

Your adventure begins as you board your motor coach for a ride through the historic streets of downtown Skagway to the Klondike Gold Fields. Once there, meet your guide and watch a video presentation introducing you to dogs of the Klondike Gold Rush and highlights what winter dog sledding is like today. Meet and interact with the Iditarod sled dogs and their puppies, stopping first by the checkpoint tent with your musher. Here you are introduced to all the gear a musher and dog team takes with them on a long distance race like the Iditarod. Your musher introduces you to the team and then hooks the dogs to a sled so you may watch a demonstration run. Next, feel the cold of an Iditarod race and experience the thrill of 40° degrees below zero for yourself! After suiting up in a parka and snow boots, step into a cold chamber for an instant deep-freeze effect. Watch as water immediately crystallizes in mid-air and experience other unique features of the extreme cold. After this chilling experience, get ready to warm up with a little gold fever! Your gold rush experience isn't complete until you meet a cast of costumed characters for some fun as well as a chance to claim your fortune at the Klondike Gold Fields. Learn the art of panning for gold while you practice your technique in warm-water troughs. You can count on striking gold. Note: Stay past your departure time, and Klondike Gold Fields will provide you a ticket for a shuttle ride back to your ship or town. The shuttle runs every 30 minutes from the Klondike Gold Fields so you can live the life of a prospector as long as you like!

Fun Time in Skagway
The insider information from Matt about running the Iditarod, his equipment, dogs & the conditions was very interesting. We met the dogs and even got to hold 4 week old pups. We saw the team hooked up to a sled and run on a gravel track. Two Ton Tom was so funny with his explanation of the gold rush and the proper way to pan for gold which we got to keep. Everyone found some. The 40 below zero room was VERY COLD but interesting. Bus driver was great.

This is a fun family oriented tour. Cat was our guide for showing us the gear used by Iditarod racers and introduced us to the dogs who provided an exciting demonstration of the power of racing dogs and their good nature. Cuddling the puppies was a highlight and made being away from my dogs at home a little easier too! Puppy breath will make any day brighter. I skipped the 40 below experience - having lived through New England winters I am familiar with super cold temps. The gold panning was fun- Two Ton Tom who did the demo was a character. I managed to get a few little flecks from my pay dirt but alas no mega nuggets this trip. This would be great for small kids as the three demos are nicely timed- nothing is too long. The bus ride out to the facility is scenic and the drivers were informative and cheerful. Everyone was happy there was no rain - and though it was chilly that cold could not dampen the staff enthusiasm.
We only had 15 people on our tour which made things even nicer- more time with the puppies and everyone was able to ask questions.
This is a good excursion for people with limited mobility- there are posts to lean on and ramps. You do go over some gravel but was fine for walking with a cane.

Wonderful Morning
Matt presented such an outstanding review of the Iterod race, the care of the dogs, including their food, outfits, travel conditions and the travel along the trail. All the equipment was shown and explained. The grandchildren loved seeing the puppies and we all learned how the dogs are harnessed to the sled. We experienced the ice house at 4o below and then it was fun to pan for gold. This trip is a great experience-so much to learn..

this was a very interesting excursion. the gold panning was fun to learn but takes practice. you will get a little gold. the 40 below was well cold. hard to imagine living in temperatures that cold. the sled dogs were great. very interesting in learning what all is involved in running the Iditarod each year. the dogs were very friendly. they get very excited when they are hooked up to run a demonstration. there were 4 2 week old puppies and they were adorable. hard not to want to take them home.
