This tour includes a round-trip cruise aboard a comfortable catamaran. Enjoy spectacular scenery including magnificent waterfalls and mountain peaks, as you travel through the waters of the Lynn Fjord, bound for Haines. Relax and enjoy as a naturalist guide educates you on the incredible fjord and local marine wildlife. Takshanuk Mountain Trail is a 3-hour, six-mile roundtrip tour through some of the most pristine wilderness in Alaska. Arriving in Haines, you'll be greeted with a warm welcome from your personal guide. You'll venture out Lutak Road alongside the Lynn Canal to Takshanuk Mountain. Note: Participants must provide a valid driver's license, in order to drive the Kawasaki Mule.

My husband and I went into this excursion a little wary. The description sounded fun, but we thought it could've ended up being pretty lame. I am so glad we were wrong! First off, the ride to Haines is gorgeous! We saw a bunch of waterfalls and some eagles too. Once we got there, we got on an old school bus and headed to where our mules would be. Now if you've gone on an ATV or something of that nature, these are not quite as thrilling, but still really fun. They seat up to 5 people, but they don't put a bunch of people you don't know in yours. The trail was specifically built for just the Mules so there's no worry of cars or anything. The views going up the hill are great. The snow and mountains are beautiful. We didn't see a ton of wildlife on the drive, but the landscapes were worth it. We also got some GREAT food on this trip. Fresh cookies and hot chocolate/cider/coffee on the way up, and BBQ chicken and halibut on the way down. That made it worth it right there! Our guides were great and drove us through a national park area on the way back. We saw some eagles and he showed us a huge eagle nest. It was really cool! Overall, we loved this excursion and would totally do it again! Yes it's not super adventurous, but it was still a ton of fun!

Review 2 for Takshanuk Mountain Trail 4x4

Not for the Adventurous
The guides on this trip are very funny, and are great people. However, we didn't see any wildlife, and the adventure level on this trip was lacking at best. If you have any experience on a 4-wheeler or other ATV, then you will find the ride to be boring. We were in low gear the entire time. The view of the scenery might be more beautiful on other days, but perhaps the overcast weather we experienced limited that. Lunch was delicious. Great excursion if you are not adverturous at heart. Several guests from big cities felt the tour was fun, so choose wisely. Overall I felt like we paid for a very expensive lunch.
We can't say enough about this excursion. A short Ferry ride tfrom Skagway to Haines is gorgeous Getting away from the crowds in the 4x4 mule was great! We stopped 1/2 way up the mountain for fresh baked cookies, coffee and hot chocolate at the Cabin. There was a bear just walking through the area as we watched from the inside of the beautiful cabin. The view from the top of the mountain was BEAUTFIUL. As my husband drove the mule we couldn't help but laugh and smile the whole time. Waterfalls are plentiful during the excursion and Angie would stop to take our picture as we drove along. If you want to relax, laugh, get away from the crowd and really see some beautiful Alaska views this is the excursion to take.

This excursion was a nice break from the towns filled with jewelry stores. You start with a 30+ min. ferry ride to the village of Haines. From there you take a short bus ride to pick up your 4x4 mule at the base. Please note that you must be 21 years of age to drive the mule. (Bring your driver's license.) This was a huge disappointment for my son who is 19 and was planning on driving. At base they also have blankets, gloves, and coats incase you need them to stay warm. Dress warm since you are going up a mountain. The guides stopped an appropriate amount of times to allow you to soak in the spectacular views and to take pictures. You will stop at a small cabin on your way up for freshly baked right-out-of-the-oven warm cookies. You will also stop there on your way down for a scrumptious meal of halibut and chicken. This was a delicious meal---actually the best meal during our week-long Alaskan cruise. Ask your guides lots of questions about what it's like to live in Alaska. Both of our guides actually lived there and were not there just for the summer. This helped get a feel of what it's truly like to live in the Haines area. I would highly recommend this excursion.
