White Pass Railway & Klondike Gold Fields

Ride the rails in style, revisit the gold rush era, and experience the life of a prospector on this outstanding, fun-filled family tour. In the comfort of your group's private parlor car, a costumed escort straight from 1898 will entertain and share personal stories of gold prospecting. The train ride follows the same route that thousands of prospectors trotted on foot in search of gold. Historical narration is provided by the White Pass & Yukon railroad crew as you witness the breathtaking panorama. Transfer to a motorcoach for a short drive to the Klondike Gold Fields. There you'll be immersed in the wild history of the Klondike Gold Rush. The Dredge Master will acquaint you with the Gold Dredge, a 350 ton gold sifting machine brought back from the Klondike and reconstructed piece by piece on the shores of the Skagway River. Learn the art of gold panning from a Prospector and practice your technique in heated water. After you've hit pay dirt, you can weigh your fortune in the Gold Shack. Enjoy browsing the Gold Parlor and transform your newfound fortune into a fine piece of jewelry. Visit the Gold Rush Brewery to quench your thirst. View a collection of Alaskan artifacts, whalebone, ivory, and local hand carved artwork. There is so much for the whole family to enjoy! Note: For your convenience, a shuttle bus runs continuously back to the ship so that you can stay as long as you like. The afternoon departure of this tour is referred to as ‘White Pass Railway 'Special' & Klondike Gold Fields'. Please refer to tour description SGY_62. George, our guide was good, even though he was new. The train ride was amazing. I recommend going outside cabin and taking pictures and seeing the beautiful scenery. The gold panning part of the expedition was very educational. My only complaint was that a full lunch wasn't served, as this excursion was five hours long. Only a light snack was served. Overall, still worth the money.

Not the best excursion
Train ride was wayyyyyyyyyyyyyy too long. A train broke down in front of us and we were asked to give up our engines and wait for a replacement one so the train in front of us could continue on. That way, two trains were then late. We lost over 30 minutes because of that. A light snack was provided but no real food. We left the ship at 7:45 am and did not return back until after 2:00. No time was allowed for eating at the only food place by the "gold fields". If you have kids with, be sure to pack a lunch for them. That is way too long for kids to go without food. The photo below shows you how much gold you really find. We combined our two to get that much. Only $10 for another pan of rocks if you want more gold.

Our excursion started with the train ride. Our 7 year old train lover was thrilled. The scenery was beautiful and historical. The ride back down via motorcoach was entertaining as we had an excellent driver who was terrific with the kids. The visit to Liarsville to pan for gold was a lot of fun. Everyone goes home with gold, no disappointments!

Our Favorite Excursion
We started our excursion with a trip to the Klondike Gold Fields. It wasn't what I was expecting in my mind but it was an excellent time. We started this leg of the excursion with a tour of a prospectors camp. The kids had fun wandering in the tent and looking for gold in the camp. Next we learned about 3 different gold mining techniques including using water cannons, dredging and gold panning. We saw a gold panning demonstration with guides who were in character, then we were able to try our hand at gold panning ourselves. Every visitor had real gold in their pan and you could keep what you found. I loved having my gold weighed and turned into a necklace charm at the end of the visit. The three of us in our immediate family found a total of over $47 worth of gold, so that charm was a very nice keepsake.
As enjoyable and fun as the gold panning was, it didn't compare to the excellence of the White Pass Railway portion of this excursion. This was my all-time favorite excursion in Alaska. We loaded the train in a large train car with a tour-guide who shared several stories about the White Pass Railroad and the travels of prospectors prior to the construction of the railroad. The scenery was breathtaking. Along the 20 mile ride to the Canadian border we saw class 6 river rapids, waterfalls, snowcapped mountains (in July), former avalanche paths, a dilapidated bridge that used to be a part of the white pass route, beautiful lakes, mountaintop glaciers, and much much more. My camera could barely keep up with all of the amazing scenery we saw. The beauty of this excursion is difficult to put into words so my suggestion is - just do it.
