Sea Lion Encounter At Cayo Levantado

Leave your ship by boat to the small island of Cayo Levantado where you'll be greeted by your guide and receive a complimentary welcome drink. Then you'll guided to the sea lion pool to meet your playful hosts and receive a briefing about the origins, lifestyles, eating habits and abilities of these interesting mammals. The briefing will end with you being able to feed the sea lions. Next you're off to the beach where you'll have the chance to go swimming with the sea lions in the open ocean to witness their swimming skills and where you'll be able to touch and caress them. The interaction ends at the beach where you'll receive a kiss from the sea lions. The remainder of your time is at leisure on the beautiful island of Cayo Levantado. Note: Participants must be at least 6 years of age. Actual time with the sea lions is approximately 30 minutes. Order of tour may be reversed with beach time first. Open water swimming is limited to good weather conditions and other variables. If it's not possible to perform in the ocean then the interaction will be limited to the sea lion pool area. At the beach, a barbeque and a tropical lunch is available at an additional charge. Credit card or cash is required for water sport rentals. Wear your swimsuit and bring a towel.

Best of Caribbean!
Skip dolphins and feast on these magnificent creatures! To be kissed/ smell their breath(ugg), feed them, swim with them is one of my best memories from this cruise! The handlers were superb, the rescue league they represent is truly a very worthy cause! I look at the photos taken by their photographer and am very glad they do not allow photography..that would have distracted me from truly enjoying and learning about these fascinating animals! The island as well was very enjoyable. I felt safe on it, there was a lot to do/ see.

Fun to do, but smaller excursion than expected

The interaction with the sea lions is broken into two parts.
First we met one female sea lion in a sandy hut. She did some tricks and posed for photos with each person/group. Be prepared to get dirty when she jumps up onto your knees to give you a hug :-) Some interesting information is shared about sea lions.
The second part of the excursion is in the sea. You enter the water and stand in a line in waist-chest deep water. The single male sea lion came out and traversed the line of people, performing tricks and posing for photos.
The excursion write-up implies that you will be interacting in a free way with many sea lions, but really there is just one at a time in a very controlled fashion.
I still think it is fun and worth doing. Also, there is a photographer who takes lots of photos, and the purchase of the photos is pretty reasonable. For my group of 2 people I got a CD with 32 pictures on it for $35 US.
The excursion suggests a welcome beverage, but our group was not offered anything to drink.
The rest of the day was spent on the beach, where there are lots of chaise loungers and reasonably-priced beer. No umbrellas that I saw though. I didn't ask about renting one because I found some shade under a palm tree.
