Bike, Hike & Kayak

At the pier, you'll board open-air safari truck and travel on unpaved roads for a scenic, coastal ride to the marble mines area. Then, mount your bike and ride beside a 300-foot-high cliff that stretches for miles. Your guide brings to life the story of this abandoned mine. Then, leave your bike at the marble mines and take a walk among the unique flora at the Boca Del Diablo blow hole. Next, board your transportation and head for La Playita Beach to kayak in the turquoise waters or relax under the Caribbean sun before boarding the safari truck and returning to the pier. This is a rugged outing with amazing sights. Note: Participants must be at least 8 years of age, weigh no more than 250 lbs. and in good physical condition. This tour is not recommended for those with back or leg problems.

Each excursion we took kept getting better! This was our last excursion and by far the best! Our guide Eddie was full of great information about the local area. This is however a rugged adventure, which means you will be tossed around in a open air safari truck - don't complain that there's no a/c! You are in the middle of nowhere - don't expect bathrooms until the restaurant beach! You do have to bike and hike, so don't complain about the exercise!! Our bikes were great taking into consideration that this is a poor country. If you love nature, exercise and seeing the locals, you'll love this! The only bad thing about this trip was the lady complaining about everything!

worse nightmare ever
we joined this excursion (december/2012, Christmas trip from NY) because we love biking and kayaking. Their bikes were in such bad shape...
The bike they first offered me (4'11"), ended up with my hubby (6'). My bike was ok. My husband's bike was for short people, like me, the seat could not be ajusted because the bolt was missing, it was going round and round, tire was almost flat, and more than other 4 riders were complaining that their bike they were using had no brakes. When my husband asked to change his bike, they told him "that's it, all we have available. Dont like it, go sit in the truck". the only bathroom available (for the 4hs trip) was at the beach. There was no toilet seat at the men's bathroom and no toilet paper at the lady's one. the guide may thought he was been funny, but when someone need to go and ask for a restroom, its no fun to get "go behind the truck" as an answer. I hope NCL drop this tour from this itinerary.

Big disappointment
Where to begin... Lack of auto regulations on the island means vehicles and motorbikes were poorly maintained and the exhaust was bad. The bikes were old and terribly maintained; pedals fell off, chains broke. When biking, you couldn't look at the scenery because you needed your eyes on the road the whole time (potholes, ruts, broken pieces of old pavement. etc.). The guide didn't wait for the whole group, or even most of the group, before talking about things, which meant a lot of people missed a lot of info. Also, he told us there was nothing poisonous on the island; then we came upon a (thankfully dead) tarantula in the road. After we saw the blowhole, we waited andwaited for the truck to pick us up again, and finally learned it had broken down. It eventually showed up but only had one gear, so after a few minutes riding we had to get off and board a different truck. All this delay meant we didn't have much time on the beach and had to race back to port to catch the last tender. Also, there was no restroom or even a portapotty available until we got to the beach, which was several hours into the trip.

Into the wilds of Dominican Republic

This is a fun way to see the wilds of the Dominican Republic. The first part is an open-air bus ride to the bike site. I wasn’t sure I would like the bus, but it is a good way to get close to the sights and sounds. It rained hard and they rolled down plastic siding that kept most of the water out. The only negative part was that you also smell the exhaust when they put down the siding. The bike ride was next. The bikes are very basic. They have one speed and adequate hand brakes. It reminded me of my bicycle when I was six. Most of the route is level with a few uphill stretches that you might be tempted to walk. The 300 foot high marble cliffs along the route are spectacular. The bus followed us and picked up anyone that ran out of energy. The roads were muddy in spots due to the rain. Some dark red mud stained my clothes. I recommend wearing old or dark clothes if there is a chance of mud. The hike was easy. Everyone enjoyed standing at the edge of the blowhole and getting a blast of air and sometimes spray. The beach was nice. We kayaked, swam or just lounged on the beach. Our guide was informative and entertaining. One last suggestion: use the bathroom before the excursion. Bathrooms are few and far between.
