This combination excursion gives you the opportunity to ride a historical train that has been in service for more than 50 years and participate on a scenic ride through rural countryside and tropical fields. Afterwards, board your motorcoach en route to the Tarcoles River where you'll go on a boat and explore the spectacular natural scenery this river has to offer. The river and mangroves attract many types of bird wildlife such as toucans, spoonbills, herons, egrets, jacanas, pelicans, scarlet macaws, iguanas and crocodiles. Upon your return enjoy some live marimba melodies and enjoy a delicious buffet of seasonal fruits and tropical refreshments. Enough time will be provided to select crafts made by local artisans before returning to your ship.
Note: This excursion might operate in reverse order. Please wear casual clothing, comfortable walking shoes, a hat, sunscreen, and bring a camera and raingear. Wildlife sightings while common cannot be guaranteed. Wheelchair restricted participants need to make advance reservations as space is very limited. The type of walking required is along even roads and compact gravel trails.

Not what I expected....
After about 45-60 minute bus ride into the country, we arrived at the place where we were to take our boat tour. The guide, who we had for the whole tour, (bus, boat and train) was pointing out all the different birds, crocs and other animals seen. After the boat tour, tropical fruits and juices were served and it was back on the bus for another half hour or so to the train. We were most disappointed with this. There is no narration onboard. The train went through small country towns and you were shown the real countryside, nothing hidden. As the guide said at the onset, " you will see the good, the bad and the ugly". The majority of what we saw was the rear of people's homes. If there is just a boat portion of the tour, I would highly recommend that but they could do without the train.
The train ride was fun, though a little scary as it rides along side the mountains with cliffs straight down and through tunnels. You will be riding past backyards of Costa Rica and the local children love to see the train and wave. The ride is rough, so if you have back problems it may be of concern. The boat ride enabled us to view lots of shore birds and crocodiles which came right up to our boat. Didn't see any toucans or macaws which I would have liked to, but I know you can't predict that. The fruits and juices offered at the end of the boat tour was delicious. The best pineapple I've ever had, even better than Hawaii. I would recommend this tour as you get to see a lot of the countryside.
We had a good time on this trip, but let me warn you the train is rather old and very very bumpy. It is a rickity train for sure, but you see so much of how the other side lives and the country it is worth the ride. The bus ride out to the boat was where we were given all our information about the country and that was very interesting. The fun part was the boat ride. When we saw the crocidiles they actually stopped the boat and the driver got out.barefoot and in shorts and hand fed the croc's chicken. It was amazing. They served us fruit and juice which were both very good and we had a really nice day.
