Haleakala Crater At Sunset: Pre-book & Save $5

This tour takes you to the top of the world's largest dormant volcano, Haleakala (which means ‘House of the Sun'). Rising over 10,000 feet from sea level, Haleakala is renowned for its raw beauty and unique scenery. At the summit, some 10,000 feet above sea level, is a vast crater, the size of Manhattan. You'll marvel at the crater's eerie lunar-like landscape of cinder cones and ancient lava formations. The view is absolutely amazing and the sunset is beautiful. On clear days, you'll enjoy views of Mauna Loa and Mauna Kea in the distance. Note: We recommend you wear comfortable clothing and bring a sweater as temperature ranges from 40-65 degrees Fahrenheit. We do not guarantee weather will permit viewing sunset. Online price is inclusive of the Pre-book and Save offer.

April 2013. HIghly recommend. Glad we didn't do the sunrise tour. We arrived about 1-1.5 hrs before sunset. Just enough time to take the short hike and absorb the views. Heavy fog and mist/rain on way up, and as soon as we approached the viewing area, sky was clear and bright. Excellent view of crater and could see Mauna Kea on The Big Island. Sunset was spectacular. Definitely cold - dressed in layers and wore my driving gloves! Our driver/guide was very informative.

More than a View
We choose this tour, rather than the sunrise tour so that we could cram two excursions into one day. It was a lucky choice on our part.
Since we were driving up the mountain in sunlight our tour guide took us round about and we were able to see many of the charming towns nestled around the base. As we ascended the mountain the overlooks and changing altitude showed the range of environments on just one small island. And the view and sunset from the top are spectacular
Note it is VERY COLD with a below zero wind chill factor. Gloves , warm hat and warm wind resistant coat a must!

Skip It!
We were less than thrilled with this excursion. My advice? Skip the excursion and rent a car to drive up there yourself. The excursion started extremely early, we got up there about 2 hours before sunset. We were satisfied after about 10 minutes with the view and took plenty of pictures. It was freezing and although we brought jackets and gloves, we were too cold to stand out and wait for sunset. Apparently everyone else agreed as we sat on the bus for 1.5 hours waiting for sunset. Finally when the sun began to set we all go back off the bus, had the driver take our pictures then piled back on the bus. Still we had to sit and wait for the sun to completely go down before leaving. It was incredibly boring.
Here's where it got really fun. Our bus broke down. And we were stuck for an additional hour. Let me also say that they do not provide any water or snacks. Oh, and our bus had a broken bathroom. So we were stuck and not able to use a restroom or have any refreshments. Our driver also would not give us any updates on the bus' condition. It was definitely not a great start to our honeymoon.
Seriously rent a car and drive yourself up. Bring snacks, water and wear plenty of layers. You can always take a layer off but it's harder to get warm. There are some amazing hiking trails as well if you drive up early in the day. They go all the way down into the Valley. Next time we'll drive and get a day hike in with a picnic lunch.

Incredible Views
What a beautiful view! We had a very clear evening to watch the sunset over Haleakala. We experienced wonderful views of Molokini, Lanai, and Molokai beyond Maui and the few clouds in the sky. We had plenty of time at the summit to hike short trails before sunset.

Haleakala is a gorgeous crater, and I’m glad we got there well before sunset, as the colors in the crater itself were spectacular. The sunset was absolutely breathtaking, and it is well worth braving the cold to be there. Just be sure to take a warm jacket, gloves and a hat, as it is pretty cold and windy at that 10,000’ elevation!
Randy, our guide, made himself available to take pictures for us, and had some great ideas on poses at the various photo op locations, resulting in some of the best pictures of my husband and I from the trip. In addition to the photos, we also have the music he shared with us as a memento of the trip!

Beautiful
This bus ride is NOT for people who get motion sick! It is a very curvy ride, at some points, I thought we were going over the edge but the bus driver knew what he was doing. I was worried because we got into some clouds and some previous posts said that they couldn't see the crater because of the clouds... our bus driver told us he had already been up to the crater that day and it was clear... We were reluctant... when we got up to the top, we couldn't believe what we saw... ABSOLUTELY AMAZING! Clouds were below us and you could see the entire crater. It was freezing so don't forget your jacket and closed toe shoes. I wore sandals and a light sweatshirt and was miserable. I watched the sunset from the bus so I could defrost. The view was still amazing!

Top of the World
Henry rode the tour bus. He did a great job with the commentary. The road was easy with stops for picture taking and bathrooms. I really enjoyed seeing the silver sword plant that does not grow anywhere else in the world. The wind was unbearably cold, but the bus stays open with warm seats. We spent a little time outdoors then got back on the bus until sunset. The clouds covered our view but it was still a great view to watch the sunset on the clouds. It looked like a view from an airplane!

Where is the crater??
I would not recommend this tour. For one thing, it is not just "a little chilly" up there - it's freezing cold and you should wear hats, scarves and gloves. Secondly, the sun does not set over the crater - so if you focus too much on the sunset, you won't be able to see the crater since it will be dark. Lastly, the driver was not clear that the sun does not set over the crater or where the actual crater even was, so many of us stumbled upon it by accident, going to or from the restrooms. This tour was a waste of time and money. Probably the Crater at Sunrise tour is more worth the money, or just the ride up there during the day.

This was a long drive (that tested my tummy until I stopped staring out the window with each sharp turn), but the driver was wonderful - funny & so full of great info! We had some extra time before sunset, so he took a scenic route on the way up - saw more of Maui. The summit is breathtaking - 80 mile wide crater - with such a variety of colors! And looking back at Maui - to see both sides of the island surprised me - could really see the true size of Maui... Was chilly, but we were prepared - I just should have brought gloves. The sunset was spectacular!!! To see it, above the clouds - wow!! What color! Took a catnap on the way down as the driver concentrated on tricky road & played Hawaiian music... peaceful excursion & energized for night back on ship!
