Haleakala Bicycling At Sunrise

What would motivate you to wake up in the wee hours of the morning? Would you do it for one of the most spectacular sunrises you'll see in your lifetime? Your adventure will begin at the top of Haleakala Crater for a once in a life time sunrise view. Once the sun has risen, you'll then start your descent to the 6,500 foot elevation of Mount Haleakala. Then following your guide, you'll gently bike down the 21 switchbacks on the western slopes of the world's largest resting volcano as your escort van driver follows for your safety. You are welcome to ride in the escort van at any time. Along the way there will be photo stops to capture your Maui moments. You'll love to coast through eucalyptus forests, glide past the colorful lavender farms in Kula, and travel along jacaranda tree-lined roadways. Finally take a van tour from Pukalani to the sea while receiving information and history of Maui's sugarcane and pineapple plantation days. This Maui Downhill Bicycle Adventure will truly be an unforgettable experience. Note: Participants must be at least 12 years of age, be at least 5 feet tall and weigh less than 250 lbs. This tour is not recommended for those who are pregnant, with heart conditions or who have had recent surgeries. It is recommended you wear closed-toe shoes and layered clothing. Your tour includes complete safety instructions by the guides, a helmet, windbreaker, gloves and custom-built bicycle. Approximate time riding bikes is about 45 minutes to an hour.

The early morning wake up call was well worth it. Our tour guides were excellent. I read some of the other reviews about the bikes being unsafe, we did not experience that. The bikes were very safe and the way they handle the traffic as you are riding was also very safe. The sunrise was one of the most amazing things we seen on our trip. It was very cold (I wore several layers of clothes) make sure you have some warm gloves. My husband and I both felt that the money we spent on this excursion was money well spent.

It really is cold!
Yes, it is an early wake up and it does get very cold waiting for the sun to come up (particularly the wind!) and unfortunately we did not experience a fantastic sunrise due to the clouds (but cannot score the tour down for something they cannot control).
The bike ride was a lot of fun - with fantastic scenery! While the switchbacks are a bit daunting at first, the guides do a wonderful job of ensuring that you are safe at all times & not at risk of other traffic on the roads!
A big thank you to the guides on my tour - Ben & Jesse for making it so much fun.

Cold morning
I was not prepared for the cold! It might have been 40 degrees out, but the wind is howling up there. You will need a coat and scarf (dress in layers!). After sunrise, you ride very comfortable bikes down the mountain. We even stopped for breakfast on the way down. The scenery is simply amazing.

Not for a novice rider
The description on the NCL website gave us the impression of mountain bikes going down a trail. It is in fact older one speed bikes that look like they have seen better days. The ride up to the top of the crater was nice and the bus was comfortable. Unfortunately, the fog rolled in right before the sun rose. When they say it can be chilly at the top, they are not kidding. My husband and I had numerous layers on and still froze. Imagine Chicago in the winter. We rode back down the mountain to the 6000 ft point to pick up the bikes and this is when everything went downhill (no pun intended). I was nervous about this tour to begin with, but after actually seeing the condition of the bikes and being told that if you go below 15 mph the bikes would wobble, I opted to ride down in the van. Not to mention the fact that you are riding on the main road up to the volcano with cars passing you at times. One of the people on our tour that rode half way down, and was an experienced biker, said it was quite scary and she felt more like she was gliding than riding. I actually asked our bus driver if he would just take my husband and I back to the ship but he insisted I stay with the group and ride down in the van in case I changed my mind. We were already annoyed about this, and then when the van stopped at a lookout, it wouldn't start back up again. So our group sat on the side of the mountain for almost an hour waiting for another van to come get us. If you are going to be transporting people, you should really keep your equipment up to par. In fact one of the other vans stopped to see what was going on but neither van had jumper cables. Then when we were on our way back to the ship, it appeared that the driver was consulting a map.
I'm sure a lot of people like this kind of ride, it just wasn't for us and really wasted half a day in Maui for us.

awesome!
This is a must do for Maui! Waking up that early is a tad difficult, but so worth it! The view of the sunrise is breathtaking! I would recommend bringing warm clothes because it was very windy and I would have liked something to cover my ears. I would also suggest a flashlight to help you navigate in the dark. The bike ride down was incredible as well. The scenery was gorgeous and on the way down we stopped in a little café for lunch that had yummy food. This is one of the best excursions I have ever done and I would highly recommend it for anyone going to Maui.

It was a cold, cloudy rainy morning during sunrise, but the sunrise was still a very pleasant sight to see. Visitors center was way too small to host all the visitors. Couldn't see the displays or much of the merchandise. It was wall to wall people. We were issued rain jackets and pants that protected against the cold and rain. Three of the jackets had broken zippers among the group. The staff did not bother to bring extra unissued jackets nor cared to take any action to replace the broken jackets. The bike ride itself was awesome as were the sights we saw on the way down. We got some awesome photos that the staff help set up and helped with the picture taking.

I actually did the one that leaves about 8 AM. It was nice. You do not get to the top of the volcano, which I didn't know, but you start above the tree line and stop in some nice spots. The bikes are dreadful - one speeds that are beat to heck. It is almost entirely downhill so there is an issue with different people having different natural speeds. If the group spreads apart too much it is dangerous for the cars that back up behind the group to pass. Our guide's solution was to put the slowest people in the front and the fastest in the back. Other groups seemed to do things differently. This was not strenous at all but you will be going fast enough that if you fall you will do some damage. There was only one slight uphill which was painful because the grandmother in front nearly came to a stop pedaling up it. The guide was very funny but talked so much about how stupid his past customer were that you had to wonder what he was going to say about us.
