Bamboo Rafting On Martha Brae River

Enjoy a countryside drive along the coast to one of the most picturesque places in Jamaica, the 'Land of Wood and Water', for a unique Jamaican experience. See the lifestyles of rural and urban Jamaica en route to the Martha Brae rafting village. Upon arrival, and after you are greeted with a welcome tropical drink, stroll the beautiful lawns and visit the herb garden, which is a presentation of Jamaican herbs that are famous for their medicinal and healing properties, prior to embarkation. Picture yourself on a bamboo raft built for two, gliding slowly down a river that meanders gently through whispering groves of bamboo and ferns, as you listen to the chatter of birds and the soft chop-chop of the raftman's pole. As your raft makes its way pass shaded banks and dappled sunlight, the raft Captain will tell you the legend of 'Matibereon' as the mild river breeze washes over you. Float along the river and relax in an atmosphere of tranquility on the three-mile journey before arriving at the Rafter's Rest, where the bus awaits for the return trip to Ocho Rios. Note: Participants must not weigh more than 280 lbs.

"rafting"
I have no idea on the review of "Tubing" & "machine guns!! WE arrived, got on our raft ride, which, was very peaceful. EXCEPT, the fact our "Captain" driver was a "RACER"... to the end! Passing everyone! But, it was enjoyable & SAFE!
No one tried to sell us anything, although, ladies had items to sell...way off shore. At the end, the driver pulled out pottery he was selling, (DID NOT NEED THESE!!, but, everyone, else HAD ONE! How do you get this home..we are traveling for 5 weeks!!) BUT, we did not take much money along, <for extras> so, we gave HIM A TIP! for the ride. Then bought 1/2 # coffee for $10., which is cheap....if I bought it through "Starbucks" website!! WE were here in 1997 & went to Dunn's River falls, but, I always wanted to do the RAFTING!! NO REGRETS!!

money trap
The tubing was fun and they guided us very well. However, midway they pulled us out for a "break," which really interrupted the trip. They tried to sell us photos and all kinds of junk.'Later, when we got to the beach, we thought we'd been hijacked. It certainly was "rustic," but it wasn't crowded and I stayed in the water for hours. My husband said that the food was not good.

Wouldn't do it again
1 hour to the river; 1-1/2 hours waiting for a raft captain then 1 hour down the river and an hour back. Not a very time efficient tour.
River was peaceful except for the people trying to sell you stuff at each bend in the river.
On the way back our bus was stopped by the police with a sub-machine gun checking papers. Kind of scary.

Booking another trip
We did this excursion back in 2005 and LOVED it. It was so relaxing. Any stress we had melted off us. The people that run the rafting tour are excellent. Very friendly, just as Jamaica is known for. The gentlemen steering the raft for us was very kind and professional. Sorry don't remember his name. He gave me a wonderful foot message with the clay mud from the river. My feet tingled with joy when he was done! Now it's 2012 and looking forward to another journey down the river.
