Journey To Waimea Canyon: Pre-book And Save $5

Discover the breathtaking gorge in the heart of Kauai, Waimea Canyon, often called the 'Grand Canyon of the Pacific.' Departing from Nawiliwili pier, you'll drive through the 'tunnel of trees' to the south coast, passing the beautiful area of Koloa. While continuing along the island's one main highway, enjoy views of Kauai's many distinctive terrains and the small villages and island landmarks. The centerpiece of your trip, Waimea Canyon, greets you with a spectacular view: an array of rainbow colors created by the reds and browns of exposed volcanic rock, mingled with the blues and greens of lush tropical vegetation. This magnificent canyon in the heart of Kauai is 10 miles long, one mile wide and 3,400 feet deep. It possesses a beauty all its own. Bring a camera to capture the spectacular beauty of this natural work of art. It's an experience to treasure. Note: There are about 30 steps at the lookout. Price reflected on NCL.com is inclusive of the $5 Pre-book savings.

Relaxing bargain
A great overall bargain tour of the island. Frequent stops to photograph the beautiful scenery with lots of history and informative "gossip" about the films made and famous residents of the island. I would not recommend this tour for children...too much bus time without adventure. A wonderfully relaxing scenic day.
( Great follow-up trip for the Blue Hawaii Helicopter tour from the day before which is very expensive but also well worth the money)

Beautiful
This was probably my favorite excursion. Very scenic, colorful, just beautiful & COLD! Remember, you're up high and it's cold and it MAY RAIN. But it is worth it! Our tour guide was the best - Lisa from Texas! I would probably go again.

Lots of Bang for your Buck
In addition to seeing a beautiful canyon, Auntie Alicia gave a great informative tour with a few bonus stops- one at the coffee plantation and another photo op stop, Blow hole pretty cool, This excursion was a great overall tour of the island. We didn't feel the need to do anything off the ship the next day, While at the canyon, it was hazy, but my pictures turned out better than I expected, so don't worry if it's not a perfectly clear day. Good value for the price.

During this short but very exciting tour we have ecountered two geological-morphological attractions present on the island: Waimea Canyon and The Spouting Horn blowhole.
Highly recommended!

Not very good
The name of this excursion is misleading--you only get 20 minutes at Waimea Canyon. The other 5 hours are spent on a bus driving around various parts of southern Kauai (and that's not because Waimea is 2.5 hours from the port--because it's not). That might be okay depending on the driver, but our driver was more interested in showing us all of his cousins' houses and businesses.

Not a good choice...
We spent a lot of time in the bus - it would have been more comfortable & enjoyable if they used smaller buses. The souvenir rest stop was not good - it was definitely overpriced! We had seen the same items in ABC stores for way less. We did get to see water spouting up as another stop but it was nothing to write home about. Waimea Lookout did provide an opportunity to take good photos but that was it. There was nothing exciting about this tour. It was the biggest waste of our time and money.

Our guide, Aunty Alicia, gave us a great introduction to Kauai. The spray of the blow holes at Spouting Horn, which occur as waves rush in under the lava shelf and burst through small openings at the surface, were amazing to see and hear! Waimea Canyon is the largest canyon in the Pacific, measuring 10 miles long, 1 mile wide, and more than 3,500-feet deep, and is a dramatic sight to see due to the incredible rainbow of colors. This tour is a great way to see some beautiful Kauai scenery with very little walking.

Best excursion of the trip
Was encouraged by a friend to do this excursion and signed up after we got on the ship. It was a gorgeous day and a breathtaking experience. The canyon was spectacular and the water spout at Koloa was absolutely beautiful. The rest stop along the way was the best souvenier store of the entire cruise. A wonderful way to end our Hawaiian adventure.

long drive
our tour guide was excellent and provided an interesting narration of the drive out to the canyon. But it was a very long ride for only a couple of scenic stops along the way, and then a slow twisty ride up to the canyon lookout. The view was terrific, but only when we got to the lookout area did we realize that we were not going all the way to the top because the rest of the road is too steep and windy for large tour buses. So all that way and our trip was incomplete! Also, there was no visitor center or souvenir shop at the lookout, so nothing to do there after taking a look and a few photos.

Beautiful View
Despite the long drive to the canyon area, our driver made the trip enjoyable by stopping in other small towns along the way and providing history and stories about the island and vegetation/animals. Once at the canyon, there wasn't much to do except take your photos; there are no interpretive signs or educational materials. The snack tent was a welcome sight though as we were hungry and thirsty. Driver took a slightly different route back to keep the scenery fresh. Canyon is beautiful, but be prepared for the long ride to and from the canyon. If you luck out and have a good driver, the trip will go by very quickly. The Poipu Beach stop was outstanding--blowholes, turtles, jewelry, restrooms.

I was quite impressed with this excursion. I had read some of the previous reviews before we booked this excursion and some were not too favorable. I cannot imagine how anyone would not look favorably on this excursion. the scenery was beautiful! On this bus trip we were able to see alot of the beauty of this island.
Again well worth the money!

Nice view
The viewis defintely worth the trip. However, our poorly maintained bus broke down about a mile from the viewpoint and we had to hitch a ride on another bus. We worried that we wouldn't make it back to the ship at departure time(and our guide told us that the ship would not wait if we were late-it has apparently happened before).

Okay
This is a nice way to spend the half day in Kauai, it will literally take the entire half a day. The driver we got was boring. He never stopped talking-everyone began tuning him out. The canyon was beautiful. Plenty of time to take pictures.

Long bus ride
This is a 5 hour bus ride with 4 stops:
Stop 1. Scenic outlook at edge of road (no services)
Stop 2. Tourist trap shot with restroom
Stop 3. Canyon
Stop 4. Blow holes
Each stop is about 10-20 minutes. The amount of time on the bus is far, far, too long for these short stops.

Foggy day turned out well
Our guide, "Uncle Willie" was fantastic. Unfortunately, there was heavy fog and rain that day so we were unable to see the canyon. We stopped there briefly, then he took us instead to a Coffee plantation. So much fun! Note: if you are prone to motion sickness, you might want to bring an anti-nauseant along. The road up to the canyon is very twisty-turny. I needed the meds!

great views + shopping
There is only one port on Kauai and it happens to be a long way from the canyon, so there was a bathroom/shopping stop both coming and going. The canyon is gorgeous. The blowhole is really neat too. I could skip the shopping but you get what you get.
