Private Island Snorkel - All Day

You may have the use of the snorkel equipment for your entire stay at Great Stirrup Cay. One of our most popular programs, this snorkel experience is perfect for beginners and experts alike. You'll have your equipment all day, so snorkel when you feel like it. Ask any of the instructors for a free lesson, and then explore the exciting underwater world of Norwegian's very own private island. Swim or wade around in the sandy shallows to check out the many schools of fish and our artificial reef. Or, if conditions permit, swim outside the cove and discover deeper water and coral formations. Note: Participants must be able to swim. This tour is the length of the ship's duration in Great Stirrup Cay.

A Jolly Good Time!
The day for our excursion to GSC turned out to be blustery, and the water therefore extremely choppy, so the fishies were understandably (though disappointingly) elsewhere. However, we could see that on a calm day, the marine life would be spectacular!
We took other reviewers' advice and a) got on the first tender boat to get on the island first and stake out a prime shaded location, and b) brought our own snorkel gear for one of us. Good advice, though not completely necessary as there was a great deal of both seating and snorkel gear available.
There is a great deal of construction going on at GSC right now (they said a $50million island reno), and we could tell that when it's complete the island is going to be amazing! In the meantime, the ongoing work was not overly annoying or obstructive of our own good time.
Free lunch BBQ and live music on the island, too! All in all, a great day.

disappointed
There were no instructions from staff on how to use the gear if you have never used snorkel equipment before. There was no instruction or map on how to find this ship underwater. You picked up your gear headed to the beach and where on your own.
The biggest disappointment was the rocks under the water as you entered the water. They were everywhere and it was very painful to walk over them to get in the water.
These should have been cleared away so you could get in the water and enjoy it.
For the amount of $$ you spend on a cruise to go to their own private island and you cant even get in the water to enjoy it was a huge disappointment.
The rest of the island was beautiful and Hippo slide was fun for kids.
But to have a beautiful beach and water that is not easy to access was very disappointing.

Just OK
This might be a good choice for those that are not experienced snorkelers. There were very few fish to see. Also, rental gear was marginal--my mask leaked--but I made it work--since I didn't want to waste time getting another one.

not worth the money
The beach was great, but that is part of the destination, however the snorkeling equiptment was a waste of money, The ocean is so full of rocks that my wife and I couldn'y get out to the deeper water where you could swim. I nearly tore up my feet on the rocks.
Save your money and just enjoy the beach and buffet which are free to everyone on the cruise, ortake some other excursion.

The best part of the whole trip!
We had an excellent time snorkeling in GSC. It's really a self-guided tour and the price covers the cost of the rental equipment. If you bring your own mask and snorkel, then don't bother paying for this excursion as you can get the vest and fins for a lesser cost. We brought our own gear because of other reviews saying they ran out of equipment, but there was plenty of equipment to go around. Definitely try to get on one of the first tender boats ashore so you can get prime lounge chairs. There were plenty of chairs to go around though!! The food was super delish and there were plenty of activities and music to keep us entertained. All in all, a great day was had and it was the best part of the whole trip!!!

It is free to get off the ship...so GO. Tender ride to island is short. LOTS to do once on dry land. Plenty of lounge chairs in many different locations. Beach areas were great. Lunch was good and food was plentiful. Lots of activities. Nice to relax with waves breaking on the beach. Good way to spend last day on cruise.

Originally we had pre-purchased the snorkel and stingray combo. ($29). Even though I had checked with my PCC to make sure the stingray experience was still available after Sandy and she confirmed this, it was not and I found the cancellation when we boarded. We decided to snorkel anyway and purchased this "excursion" for..$29! The white buoys were hard to see to find the "treasures" though I found some on my own. I would suggest bringing your own snorkel and mask. My husband had never snorkeled before and there was noone there to give him a brief lesson as I apparently could not make him understand how to use the snorkel and mask properly. No refunds for him! The best variety of fish is way out by the big rocks and I did get some nice pictures. I was also stung by a jellyfish that I never saw, and the lifeguards had vinegar on their stands for me to use. I was disappointed that the stingray part being cancelled was not announced before the cruise to those of us who purchased it so we could have time to find another stingray encounter to enjoy at another port.

Great tour if seas are calm

We looked forward to snorkeling on Great Stirrup Cay. However the seas were rough so we could not see anything due to the sand underwater being stirred up. We had pre-paid so we were a little concerned we would be out our money. We returned our equipment explaining the situation and were asked what our room numbers were. We gave them the info, they noted it on our waivers and said the money would be credited to our accounts....no questions asked! Great customer service! I was very pleased. My recommendation is wait to see if the water is calm, then sign up. But you can pre-pay and know that NCL is flexible and understanding. I will try again on our next cruise.

Bring your own gear
Bring your own mask, snorkel, and underwater camera (or 3). You can rent a life vest for $5 and snorkel all day. There are lots of rocks as you step into the water and coral so watershoes would def have been helpful.

A very fun day
Very beautiful beach, and crystal clear water. Plenty of chairs and places to wander. The lunch provided was delicious. Lots of marine life to explore. Bring your own mask and snorkel if you can, otherwise you'll be forced to rent the whole package.

Wonderful Time
We Spent over 3 hours in the water snorkeling. there was a storm looming, so the wave action was a little high, which meant the visibility was low. It isn't the greatest spot for seeing a variety of fish, but we did still see some interesting things. The buffet lunch was wonderful there was plenty of room to swim play sit or lay down. we spent pretty much the whole day there...The shopping was good and the staff was fabulous......Look forward to returning again some day.

Island is being upgraded but food was great aoong with the music. Swimming was great but saw very few fish in the lagoon. More than enough chairs and lounge chairs are provided to guest to use. All employees were very friendly and helpful will be sure to be back.

Snorkeling Even Scuba Divers Will Enjoy!
If you only snorkel at one location on your cruise, make this the one! It's an excellent value for the amount of the time you have the equipment and there are tons of wildlife. We saw bar jack, barracuda, urchins, anemones and were surrounded by a school with literally thousands of smaller fish! I've been scuba diving in several countries and have to say that this is the best snorkeling I've ever done. Just to be safe though, I wouldn't recommend wearing jewelry as barracuda can be very curious about shiny objects.

Loved it!
I read the reviews for this excursion before I cruised. We didnt have any issues with the tender. We were up early and just decided to go over, probably around 9am and we walked right onto a boat and were taken over. We had time to walk around and explore and still have our pick of chairs on the beach. At some point though the beach suddenly seemed to be packed. So if you are worried about crowds then go over early. It is that simple. The buffet lunch is HUGE with a million items to chose from, that was awesome. Dont miss at least going over to the island..the boats run all day long and you can go back whenever you like.

This was our first snorkeling experience and we had so much fun we have since bought our own snorkeling gear! Water is exceptionally clear once you get out of the initial beach area where everyone is swimming, water is also very calm making it pretty simple to snorkel in, the coral is not extensive but you will see various types of fish up close and personal, we've also encountered very large stingrays in the water here as well.
