Nassau Forts & Junkanoo Museum

Explore some of the oldest sights in Nassau and learn about one of the most colorful festivals in the Caribbean, 'The Bahamas Junkanoo.' Your tour begins with a drive to Fort Fincastle built in 1793 and set on top of Bennett Hill. Learn about the Queen's Staircase and its history, or simply enjoy a panoramic view of the island and Nassau Harbor - this is your perfect photo opportunity. Then, continue on an informative drive to the Junkanoo exhibit. Here, you'll learn the history and different components that create this spectacular yearly National Cultural Festival of the Bahamas. Your host will demonstrate costumes, pictures and pulsating music made from goat skin drums, cow bells and horns. Your tour continues with a short drive to Fort Charlotte, the largest of all the forts, built between 1787and 1789 by Lord Dunmore. It was named in honor of the wife of King George III. Towards the end of your tour enjoy a complimentary drink and upon your return, you can either shop at the Straw Market or head back to your ship.

Huge Disappointment
Huge disappointment. Junkanoo Museum was a small house. The owner was pleasant & informative, but it should have been a 15 minute stop instead of nearly one hour. After a 10 minute education, the rest of the time was spent ringing bells & making noise. Seriously. The forts should have been a highlight, but we were so rushed that there was no time to read the descriptive exhibits or watch the video. The "tour guides" offered nearly no historical education, had minimal knowledge of the forts, and had their hands out for tips for offering NO service. Worst tour in 10 years of cruising.

Horrible tour
Probably toe worst tour we have been on in about 12 total cruises. Driver/guide just dropped us off several times and provided no direction as to where to go. The guide provided by one of the forts was more interested in getting his tips than with guiding. The Junkanoo museum was a joke and just wasted time. Badly over-priced for what was provided.

A bust
This tour is definitely overpriced. The museum, while a bit educational, was "a whole lot of nothing." The forts didn't have much to see, the "guide" expected a tip for not doing much for about 10 minutes. Our driver was the best part of the tour, showing some of the local areas of the immediate town. Definitely a big disappointment.

Lame
This was disorganized from the start. Once off the ship we had no idea where to meet our group. Our taxi driver was nice enough, and relatively informative, but the ac was not adequate and all of us were miserable. There was not much time at the forts, but there wasn't much to see there either. The Junkanoo Museum was a joke. It was in someone's small musty smelling house, and while the owners/guides were enthusiastic and informative, we felt as if we were in pre-school. This really can't be passed off as a museum and I really don't understand these other reviews. This tour was not worth the time or money.

mostly fun day
The Junkanoo Museum was great. The proprietors were gracious and informative. It was nice to be able to learn something of the local Bahamian culture. But the Forts portion was disappointing. We weren't given a chance to read any of the descriptions - and they looked good - and felt we were rushed out. Too bad..... Tour taken in March 2012, but this year isn't available in the NCL options.

Really not good.
FEB 11-18 2012, The Junkanoo Musuem is a lady's old house, you go in the front room, old kitchen, and back patio, felt like pre-school, awful!!! The forts were very boring, guides stories were a incomplete and lacked historical value. The bus driver was nice, and showed dowtown area well, but I would have rather rented a Jeep or scooter and just gone around by myself.

Authentic Bahamas
This was a great experience all around. It was very educational but not boring at all as you would think with most educational tours. The museum was by far the best part. We learned a lot and were happy we skipped the resorts and were able to see what the Bahamas is really like.

Interactive Educational Fun
Junkanoo Museum was a real treat. The museum tour guide gave us an interesting history of the museum itself and engaged us in creating our own Junkanoo music and costumes for this annual festival. Never been to anything quite like this little gem of a museum before.

Junkaroo
This was a really fun excursion. It includes a lot of laughter and fun with the educational aspects of the experiences. Well worth the time and makes the island come alive for everyone, young and old alike.
