Pompeii Excavations: Pre-book & Save $10

Pompeii once supported a flourishing civilization that was revealed nearly intact after being buried for about 1,700 years. The once-prosperous commercial and political center with a population of 25,000 was hidden under 20 feet of volcanic ash and cinders during the fateful eruption of Mt. Vesuvius in 79 A.D. Originally a seaport, the eruption raised the land and left the ruined town far from the bay. You'll enter Pompeii through the Sea Gate and walk along the cobblestone streets to the Agora. Surrounded by temples and porticoes, this was the religious, civic and business center of the city. Because Pompeii was so well preserved, you can see many fine details that reveal the lifestyles of the residents, such as mosaic floors and colorful frescoes in some of the homes. As you wander through this ancient city, you can't help but notice the still-active Mount Vesuvius towering above. If time permits, you'll visit a cameo factory nearby to see how the famous jewelry is made and then have some time to browse the store. Note: During summer months expect extreme heat, crowded venues and long lines. We recommend that you dress in layers and bring bottled water. This tour includes extensive walking during the visit of Pompeii's excavations. Online price is inclusive of the Pre-book and Save offer.

We took this tour in late April 2013. Our Guide was funny and knowledgeable. The tour of Pompeii was thorough and entertaining. The visit to the cameo shop is strictly sales oriented and overpriced. Fair-priced souvenirs can be found in the outside market. The tour is entertaining, a good value and leaves time in the afternoon for pizza!

Perfect Tour
A good tour guide is a good storyteller. A good storyteller brings to life a place that was hidden for 1,700 years. Maria, our guide was able to accomplish this. She had good facial and vocal expressions and used the right words to keep people interested and enthralled. The time spent in each place was well planned. The different spots she took the people were of interest. No one drifted away. No one lost interest.
The tour provides water. Each person has a personal listening device. The tour was not difficult to walk, but, stones can be tricky. I saw someone wearing flipflops, I would suggest sturdy footwear. Also, a hat or cap. Dress in layers since it was cool at the start of the tour, then got warmer.
There was a visit to a cameo factory that showed a short video and time to shop. The prices were ok. At the end of the tour, there was time for a bathroom break and shopping.

Pompeii
Our guide was very good in telling a lot of important information about Pompeii. There was a lot to see and we covered much of the area. There was probably a lot of the area we did not see but our guide did the best in the time allotted. Lots of architecture to take pictures of and many interesting stories about the culture.

POMPEII
My wife and I took this tour while on the EPIC in mid October. The weather was wonderful for a walking tour; we bothwore shorts and very comfortable walking shoes. The tour requirements mention several hours (2-2.5)of walking along uneven cobblestone streets; this was a very true statement. There was an older (78 year old) lady in our group who had trouble keeoing up. The tour guide was very patient and walked at a pace to allow her to hear him and keep him within visual distance. However, it did slow the entire group down some.
My wife and I were both extremely impressed with the state of preservation of Pompeii. Most of the buildings are a very nice still standing. I don't mean the guide points out an outline of where things were - the buidlings are actually still standing and in a very good state of preservation. You get a great sense of the city from centuries ago. Our tour guide (whose name I can't remember) made the city actually come alive with his descriptions of the various locations and stops along the way. We didn't have any children in our group so the guide did take us thru the famed red light district and a brothel. The level of detail, even here, is absolutely amazing. Some of the other groups complained that they didn't get to see this area; I would recommenrd asking your tour guide early whether they intend to take you there.
This is a great tour for folks who are capable of making the walk and keeping up with the group. It really does require soem serious walking along uneven cobblestone streets and up inclines.

Worth taking
Took this excursion in September 2012.This was a tour worth taking. The time alloted was just enough to take in the cultrual background of Pompeii with time left over to explore the city of Naples on your own. Our tour guide was very thorough and informative. Know in advance that the walking in Pompeii can be difficult with the uneven cobblestone streets. The cameo factory was just a typical tourist stop. Overall, enjoyed this excursion.

Fascinating!
Our family of 5 loved this adventure. We had ages ranging from 10-44 and we all enjoyed visiting Pompeii. Our tour guide, Jose', was very interesting and shared information that made Pompeii come back to life. Honestly, I expected to see rocks and rumble, which is not at all what we found. We still had time to walk around Naples and enjoyed a fabulous pizza in a quaint little neighborhood before returning to our ship. Pompeii was an absolute "not to be missed" for our family.

Great tour but disappointed in one detail
On the coach to Pompeii, our guide Marissa provided very interesting information about the surrounding area.
On arrival in Pompeii, we stopped at a Cameo factory for 20 minutes. This was just the right amount of time.
Marissa was very knowledgeable and did a great job of describing how the things we saw would have fitted into the bigger picture nearly 2000 years ago.
A number of little details and side-stories were also a nice touch that you wouldn't get without a knowledgeable guide.
An audio system was provided so that we could hear our guide at all times. This meant it would be very difficult to get lost (although a couple did) and also meant it was always very easy to hear what the guide was saying.
So why have a marked this 4-stars and not 5-stars?
There are phallic symbols in the grounds of Pompeii that provided directions to a brothel that is still there today. The brothel has the sorts of paintings on the walls that you would expect to see in such a place.
Marissa pointed the phallic symbols out to us but stated that they were simply a sign of strength and provided good look to the nearby buildings. When I specifically questioned her about them being directions to a brothel she denied its existence. It is almost as though she was ashamed of it for some reason and wanted to re-write the history books.
It is one thing not to include the brothel on this tour (we certainly only covered a fraction of what is a massive area) but it is something else to lie about its existence when specifically asked. It is for this reason that I have given this tour 4-stars instead of 5-stars. I was very happy with the tour but was disappointed about this one detail.

Great half-day tour
This was a great half-day tour to start our cruise. The tour guide told us about Naples and the surrounding areas on our drive to Pompeii, then he took us throughout the ruins. There was enough time after we returned to the ship to walk around Naples and get some pizza, but not enough time to take the boat to Capri (since the ride is 50 minutes one way and the boat only comes once every hour).

This was an amazing tour. It would have been even better if we had not gotten a sermon on how some religions aren't like us and blow them selves up. He had half our group spred out over the ruins because he didn't wait till we were all in a group to go. Someone had to get him to stop so we could gather up the rest of the group. He was so far ahead we lost sight of him. We missed the mummified bodies and most of the artifacts at the end because he gave no time to view them. We were able after we got home to view them on line. We would take this again but hopefully without this guide.
