Flavors Of Sorrento & Pompeii: Pre-book & Save $10

Start your morning with a visit to Pompeii. Here, a flourishing civilization, buried for 1,700 years under 20 feet of ash and pumice, was recovered so perfectly preserved that you can see how the 20,000 residents lived and loved, worked and played, ate and drank. En route, you'll visit a cameo factory nearby to see how the famous jewelry is made and then have some time to browse the store. Visit the cliff-top town of Sorrento, a village with splendid views of the sea and the colorful marina below. Enjoy some free time to explore the flower-filled main street and the Corso Italia, lined with boutiques. Then it's on to the hills above Sorrento, where a family-owned farm produces outstanding homemade products. Tour the farm and its old wine cantina, learn how to produce olive oil and homemade mozzarella, and during lunch get a chance to sample the local fare surrounded by a lemon and olive grove. Note: During summer months expect extreme heat, crowded venues and long lines. We recommend that you dress in layers and bring bottled water. For all Norwegian Epic calls and Tuesday calls on Norwegian Spirit, lunch at the farmhouse will be after 2:30 pm. Online price is inclusive of the Pre-book and Save offer.

My favorite tour of our entire cruise.
The day started with a beautiful drive along the coast to the town of Sorrento. For the best views get a seat on the right side of the bus as you face forward. We were given two hours of free time to wander the charming historic district of Sorrento and the many shops. Next we drove to a farm for lunch. The farm was very interesting and I wish we could have seen more of it. Lunch consisted of cold meats, cheeses, olives, bread and wine followed by a meatless pasta dish of tomato cream sauce and ricotta cheese which was boring but not bad. For dessert we had two cream puffs and a sampling of limoncello. We were shown how Mozzerella cheese and how olive oil is made. We next drove to Pompeii where we first were taken to a Cameo shop and spent a good half hour there. It was a waste of precious tour time. The tour of Pompeii was good but we only saw a small section of it and I think we missed a lot of the sites that are usually considered the highlights. The amount of time spent there seemed about right although it would have been nice if we’d have had some free time at the end to wander a little on our own (that wasted time at the Cameo store). Vesuvius looms ominously in the midst of the entire area and I couldn’t help but wonder what it must be like to live in its midst. This was a really nice tour and my favorite of the entire cruise.

In the Shadow of Vesuvius!

Our day started and ended in the shadow of the sleeping Mount Vesuvius. Our tour was in reverse order than the published itinerary. We started the morning climbing the hills of Naples to view the sleeping Mount Vesuvius over the Bay of Naples. Our guide narrated our journey with insight into the culture and infamous history of the area. Soon, we arrived in the hilltop city of Sorrento where there was ample time to walk through the local shops or maybe stop at a street side café for a coffee. After our visit to Sorento, it was on to cameo factory to see handmade works of art being made before your eyes. We then visited a local farm with orchards filled with olives and lemons. And… of course some cows for the milk to provide the base for the homemade, handmade mozzarella they made during a demonstration. The farm served a simple anti-pasta lunch (tomato and homemade mozzarella, Parma ham, and salami) along with wine and sparkling water. After lunch, there was a sampling of the local favorite, Limoncello. Then it was on to the lost city of Pompeii. This was a truly unique experience walking through the ancient city devastated by the 79 AD eruption of Mount Vesuvius. The structures are well preserved. And our guide went into great detail to recreated what life was like before the eruption. His vivid descriptions allowed you to visualize the Pompeian’s culture and life. There was ample time to walk through the streets and see the plaster casts of the inhabitants as they fell during the eruption. A great excursion that should not be missed!

Great Day!
gorgeous weather and a fabulous time sept 15,2012. the drive on the coast to sorrento was beautiful. thank your driving for getting the big bus around on the tiny roads. Sorrento was a cute little town, fun for shopping. Pompeii was educational and interesting left you in ahhh wondering how they built such things. The farm was a gem hidden along the hills. they make their own wine/cheese/olive oil/lemoncello. lunch was meats/mozarella cheese/breads/wine, then pasta with homemade ricotta, dessert was blueberry pie. Our family and friends had the best time here.

Breathtaking!
This was a wonderful experience! Our stop at Pompeii was informative and educational! Our tour guide was the best! It still amazes me how Pompeii has been preserved. On to Sorrento after that stop - what a breathtaking ride. Such a quaint little town. We had ample free time for shopping and a cappuccino! After that we had lunch at a quaint little farm. We saw how the olives were pressed for olive oil; saw how the cheeses were made, and our lunch consisted of foods and wines made entirely at the farm. Yummy! Then off to a cameo factory - unfortunately our time there was only 20 minutes, and even though we were offered a significant discount, that was far too short a time for me to make such a purchase. It was an absolutely wonderful day.

Great combination of food and history
This was a great tour. We were bused down to Sorrento and given about an hour and a half to explore, which is really just enough time to go to the lemon grove, get some gelato, explore the shops, consume many lemoncello samples, and declare yourself satisfied. After Sorrento we went to a family farm where they served us homemade mozzarella cheese, olive oil, antipasti, pasta, lemoncello, and more wine than you'll know what to do with. The homemade food was all excellent, the pasta was just ok but nobody cared after being impressed with everything else. Lastly you go to Pompeii, with some time before and after to explore the touristy area out front (read: more lemoncello samples). They do take you into a cameo factory but you can turn around and walk right back out the door if you wish. As for Pompeii, it's as excellent as you would think. There's no way you can see all of it in a day, but I felt we saw a large part of it and spent enough time to be happy, we were there for a few hours. I'd definitely recommend this tour to anybody.

Another Great Excursion
After boarding our bus we were driven along the coast to Sorrento. We were given time to explore this beautiful coastal village. There are beautiful beach views but we just explored the alleyways of shops! Then it was on to the farm for lunch. We learned about making olive oil and then we were given a demonstration of mozzarella making. This was followed up by a delicious Italian meal. We had unlimited wine, with a fresh tomato and mozzarella salad, followed by pasta with cake for desert. Then we sampled Lemoncello and Lemoncream. Everything was delicious!
Then it was on to Pompeii. It was very, very hot and we have previously visited Pompeii so this wasn't a highlight for us. We did the majority of the tour but did cut out early and return to the drop off point to sit at a shady cafe enjoying a cold drink. Luckily that was an option. The highway was closed on the way back, so we also got a drive by tour of several cities on the way back to the ship!

"5 Italian Minutes"
Our guide Eugeno, was quite entertaining! He mixed his comedy with history and fact in a pleasant and friendly manner. I hope you get him on your tour. We went in August, so the heat was overwhelming but Eugeno provides water and tries to stay in the shade as much as possible while in Pompeii. The bus was nice and the ride to Sorrento was quite beautiful. The meal served was delicious and watching the locals make Buffalo mozerella was great. Enjoy the lemoncello!

good excursion.
This was our first stop and a great excursion. Would have liked to shorten Pompeii an hour and add it to Sorrento. The shopping and food in Sorrento is great, maybe the best shopping on the cruise,,, if you see it here and like it, buy it!!! There are scarfs at every stop, buy the prices here are the best.

Terrible food at the farm!
We were on the May 13 2012 cruise. We had read all the reviews and decided to take this one. Note: all reviews are old!
The pompeii part was amazing, and so was sorento and the drive to it. Our guide was excellent.
But we were especially looking forward to the farm experience and the fresh italian food.
Dont expect any fresh products/herbs in the food. The lunch was terrible - every single person on the 3 buses, sent back the food (pasta) after few mouthfuls. Some of us discussed it later, how tasteless it was. The mozarella demonstration lasted about 4 minutes. Olive oil production happens only in Oct-December. So we saw the old machinery. I would give the farm a miss. Wish we had decided on lunch on our own. People who did that, had a great lunches in Sorrento. For the $$$ amount for this excursion, the "flavors" part was just missing

Italian Perfection
My husband and I couldn't have asked for a better excursion in Naples! The morning was spent in Pompei and we were shocked by how big the city was! Our tour guide Rossana was great at explaining everything as she guided us through the excavations. We spent about 2 hours at Pompei. Then it took an hour to drive to Sorrento from there, but the views along the way were breathtaking, so it didn't feel like much time at all. Once arriving in Sorrento we spent about 20-25 minutes seeing a cameo and woodwork demonstration and then had about an hour of free time. Sorrento was beautiful! After that, there was a short drive to a farmhouse where you get to see how mozzarella is made and then get to taste it with your lunch, and the mozzarella was amazing! We've never had anything that delicious! The rest of lunch was fantastic too! All in all, we can't recommend this excursion enough! Great use of our time in Naples to make the most out of our day there!

Visiting Sorrento and the farm was my favorite excursion on the whole trip. It is so beautiful there!!!! In Sorrento, we walked down to the hotel Syrene and had a glass of wine on the terrance over looking the coast. We were the only couple there and it was so peaceful and serene. This is what Italy is all about!! I plan on coming back now staying at this hotel again for several days just because it was so lovely! The water below is so clear and blue!! The farm was charming and the limoncello and food was awesome!! Pompeii was huge!! It was way bigger than I thought it would be, although, I was bored. My husband thought it was cool though. I wish we just stayed in Sorrento. The cameo factory visit was obvious that they just wanted to make a last quick sale on the large group and that was annoying. Overall, this was my favorite excursion.

Loved, loved Sorrento. This is how I imagined Italy to be. They took us to a beautiful farm where they grew lemons and olives. Had a marvelous meal from homegrown food. Had some time to explore Sorrento and then off to Pompeii. Fascinating look at the old city. Excellent tour guides.

Flavors of Sorrento & Pompeii
This was a great tour! The town of Sorrento was charming & beautiful. The demo on inlaying of wood was really interesting. I loved the farm and the information on the olive growing and processing. The cheese and lunch was great and the lemoncello to die for!!! Our tour guide was educatonal and funny. He really shared a lot of great information at Pompeii. It must have been an incredible city in its day. Also, the cameo factory was very enjoyable. This tour was definitely worth your time!

This tour is especially nice because of the variety you experience during the day.
We started with a bus ride up the Amalfi Coast. Sit on the right side of the bus because even though you will return the same way, you'll be too tired by then to take pictures or appreciate the beauty. Our first real stop was Sorrento where we had an hour and a half to shop. In my opinion, this was the only disappointing part of the day. Since we are not shoppers, and since we hadn't had any of the historical background to know what to do besides wander the shop-laden streets, we became a little tired. Nevertheless, if you want to sample limoncello where it's made or buy souvenirs (scarves, leather, shoes) you'll have plenty of time to explore.
After our time in Sorrento, we boarded the bus and drove to an olive and lemon farm where we were treated to a cheese making demonstration and a wonderful lunch. The lunch began with delicacies of the farm--cheese, meats, and bread--and continued with pasta and dessert. The lunch was excellent (though the wine was not very good). Afterward we enjoyed tastes of limoncello in the giftstore.
Next, we drove to Pompeii where we were awed by the size of the city and the excavations that make it come alive. Of all the places we went on the cruise, Pompeii was the most surprising to me. I'm sure we only saw a fraction of the city, but in that fraction our tour guide filled our minds with history and stories so detailed and interesting that I am anxious to read more now that I am home. It must be said that Pompeii is HOT. It is, after all, bascially a giant lava bed soaking up the sun without shade or relief. Luckily, we had an active tour group who was willing to walk fast and see much, causing our guide to repeatedly warn us to slow down lest we stumble on the stone roads.
After Pompeii we visited the cameo factory right outside the gate. (I get the feeling that some of these stops are primarily bathroom breaks where public bathrooms are scarce and merchants can benefit from the large number of tourists passing through their establishments.) The cameos are beautiful, and we did, in fact, purchase two for our daughters back home.
The bus ride home was uneventful as nearly everyone fell asleep. The day was wonderfully exhausting, full of variety, and building many memories that we will treasure for a long time.
