Mountain Point Snorkeling

Immerse yourself in Southeast Alaska's breathtaking underwater world as you snorkel the calm and clear waters of Mountain Point. Stay toasty warm in a state-of-the-art wetsuit. Receive a brief orientation, before entering the water from a protected beach. You'll observe and handle a variety of multicolored sea stars, urchins, sea cucumbers, and the giant sunflower star during your one-hour guided marine life tour. Note: Participants must weigh between 90 and 250 lbs. to ensure proper wetsuit fit. Participation requires completion of a waiver, as past or present medical conditions may restrict participation. Participants should be reasonably physically fit. We recommend you bring a towel and a swimsuit to wear under the wetsuit.

Unique experience
June 2012. I had to conquer some fears to do this, but it was great. The guides are so helpful and calm, they know how to work with people that range from being scared of water to the expert divers. They know how to let you do your thing or to fully drive the experience if you have no clue what you are doing. It took about an hour to get the water after squeezing, jumping, and wiggling into the suit and all the gear. The suit does keep you warm enough. We had about 60-70 minutes in the water, and then made our way back to unsuit and shower off (they do have soap, shampoo, and outdoor showers). Also, they provide hot chocolate, coffe, tea, and water for you before and after at the office. Suggestions:go to the bathroom right before putting the suit on and bring or buy a water camera for the experience. Take a chance on this excursion it was surprisingly great for someone who never thought they could snorkel.

Well worth it!
If you have snorkeled in the Carribean then this isn't the same. There are definitely better spots in the world to go..... However, if you are relatively new to the sport or would just like a chance to get in the water while on an Alaskan cruise then this is definitely a good choice. Saw quite a few creatures while swimming and diving. More abundant and colorful than I expected. Not to mention the bald eagles playing overhead! First class gear and well trained staff. Special shout out to Billy who took the extra time help my young son work through his inital fears. Entire family had a very good time.

Not much to see, but still great!
Don't fear the cold water! The wet suits are thick and will keep you warm. BUT they are pretty difficult to get in and out of. My excursion was at 6:30 in the morning which was not very good for me since I am not a morning person, but the water will definitely wake you up. There is lots of kelp and the water is rather murky (even in good weather, which I was fortunate to have in late May). You see starfish, sea cucumbers, urchins, and possibly small fish. It's nothing too exciting to be honest, but like other reviewers have said--how many other people can say they've gone snorkeling in Alaska?! It's a great experience! The staff is amazing and made supporting them all the more worth it! They also have really good hot chocolate! Oh, and when you are finished they don't have an actual shower, but you can pour hot water inside your wetsuit--it feels amazing and you aren't left feeling all sticky from the salt water. Don't forget a towel!

How Cool is This!
The weather was drizzly; runoff from the rain made the water murky so you couldn't see very much; you had to be ready at 6:30AM; but this was one of the best excursions we have ever taken. Why? Because it was a real adventure. Everyone snorkels Bermuda or the Bahamas or Mexico, but how many people have snorkeled Alaska? Our group consisted of 18 plus 4 guides. The guides were terrific. While one was explaining things, another one was bringing up new creatures from the bottom: starfish, sea cucumbers, anemone, etc. The people who went developed a real camaraderie. The equipment was first-rate. The wet suits worked great. After about 15 seconds, the water that seeps into the suit warms up. We were in the water for about an hour, and could have stayed in a lot longer. Do this, and you will have memories and conversation starters for a lifetime.

FUN!
This was a great experience! Bring money if you want to buy a shirt or sweatshirt! I enjoyed this excursion even though I have snorkeled in many tropical locations and am scuba certified. It was raining the day we went but we had a blast anyway. Be ready to dress in a changing room with limited privacy.
I would not recommend this for people do not feel comfortable in choppy water.

Bucket List
So how many of your friends and family can say they went scuba diving in Alaska? The water is not as cold as you would think. Guides are awesome. This is one excursion you MUST go on.

I am always cold & wear lots of warm layers. I was NOT cold on this excursion. Our trip was in August with great weather, the wet suits did the trick!
I highly recommend this excursion, it was a rare opportunity and lots of fun. Not appropriate for small children or very weak swimmers. The guides were friendly, knowledgeable, and watched out for everybody. I didn't time it exactly, but I would guess we got 90 minutes in the water.
Would do this again in a heart beat!

Do this one!
I was convinced to go on this excursion based on the great reviews people wrote, and after returning from my trip, I couldn't wait to write one of my own! The wet suits DO keep you warm as well as help keep you afloat, but the guides offer weight belts to swimmers who want to swim down and explore below the surface. We didn't use a belt, and we didn't miss a thing! I would not take young kids along or weak swimmers that you have to see after very closely, since there is quite a bit of keeping up to do when the guides call the group toward a new area to explore. Besides, you won't want to take your eyes off the incredible underwater views! We saw star fish of every color and kind, crustaceans of many sorts, an eel, sea cucumbers, jelly fish, and much more. The guides would bring creatures up for us to examine (in order to protect them from tourists like us who might hurt them) and the information they shared about the sea life and underwater ecology was fascinating. The guides were friendly, knowledgeable, patient, generous, and seemed to truly enjoy what they do. They kept our interest and kept us moving from place to place to see something new. Swimming among the kelp fields was amazing! It was like an underwater forest...mystical flowing fronds of kelp leaves, silent but alive, reaching up from the bottom and surrounding you with magical motion. I will dream about this experience for years to come.... The entire cruise is spent looking AT the water - why not take a look at what is underneath?

This was my most memorable activity of the trip. We saw plenty of under water wildlife and to top it off we swam within 15ft of an eagle perched on a rock formation. The water temperature was only 55 deg. F but the wetsuit kept us plenty warm.
