Mendenhall Glacier Adventure Hike

Your guide selects the glacier trail best suited for the group's ability and the day's hiking conditions. Experience cascading waterfalls, serene meadows and quiet forest glens. During much of the hike, the views are panoramic, encompassing expanses of glacier-carved wilderness. A variety of animal species inhabit this place. Your guide will help you keep a look out for signs of animals and wildlife encountered along the trail; perhaps you'll discover a hidden porcupine or pause to listen to the songs of a hermit thrush. Whether you're interested in wildflowers or wildlife, scenery or activity, expect a refreshing outing with many opportunities for photography and lasting memories of Alaska. Note: This excursion is suited for those who love to hike, and are physically able to do so for 3 1/2 hours. A fun way-finding activity is included for kids (and kids at heart) that includes a complimentary topographic trail map. Depending on the trail chosen for the day, you'll hike between four to six miles, with a possible elevation gain of 600 to 1,000 feet. Sturdy footgear is recommended. All tour participants on this excursion are eligible to enter to win cash prizes in the tour operator's 2012 Capture Juneau Photo Contest. Excellent Guide
Our guide Jenny was excellent and well organized. Very knowledgeable and easy going. Plus there was a 2nd guide who remained at the back to support any stragglers in our group of 6 people. My only regret was that we didn't get as close to the actual Mendenhall Glacier as I thought we might.

This was the first time I'd ever seen a glacier and it was an awesome first start. On the bus ride to the hiking area wasn't bad. The guide talked to us the whole way and told us about the history. We even saw about 5-7 bald eagles! The hike was educational although it was cut short because of rain. The view we got from the end of the hike was only a view of the lake Mendenhall carved so I enjoyed it when we went down in front of the lake more. There is also a huge waterfall next to the glacier which makes it a gorgeous site to see!

This is a beautiful place. Its amazing how close you can get to the glacier. The waterfall next to the glacier is huge and powerful, It would be a magnificent spot for a wedding.

Scott & Jenny from Gastineau Guiding were wonderful and a wealth of information. Scott (if asked) could possibly tell you all 650 types of lichen in the forest! This is a beautiful hike but it's helpful if you are in relatively good shape to climb the 209 steps at a certain point in the hike. The views from the lookouts were so beautiful and this made it well worth the hike!
