Helicopter Glacier Walkabout

Discover the diversity of the southeast Alaska landscape via helicopter as you fly over temperate rainforests and granite peaks that surround Alaska's capital city. To begin your walk, your pilot will choose a landing site on one of the 36 glaciers in this 1,500-square-mile Icefield. On this relaxing, non-strenuous, one-hour interpretive walk, your guide will point out and explain the glacier features and allows ample time for photos. Trekking poles and crampons will provide superb balance and traction, enabling you to travel easily on the gently rolling glacial terrain. Note: Participants must be at least 8 years of age and be able to stand and walk on rolling terrain for an hour. Flight time is approximately 35 minutes, with an hour on the glacier. Wind/water-proof outerwear, boots, gloves, hip pack, trekking poles, and crampons are provided. No experience is necessary. This tour is non-refundable. Guests 250 lbs. and over are charged an additional rate to reserve two seats for safety and comfort. These spaces are capacity controlled. You will not be able to book this option online. This excursion is awesome! It was so exciting flying over all the mountains and onto the glacier in a helicopter. We received a briefing and safety instructions before flying. The guides were attentive and helpful on the glacier. This is not to be missed. It is cold! So dress warmly. They provide glacier boots, but, you need to bring all your other gear. Remember your camera!

Words can not express the beauty of standing on the glacier. We were picked up in a van and driven to the airport where we were given our warm weather gear. We were then given a briefing on the flight and emergency procedures. Our pilot was friendly and as we flew over the glaciers he explained what we were seeing. When we landed, we were met by our guides and given the crampons. As we walked around the guide explained what was happening and how things change on a glacier.
The guides were friendly and informed and made the trip one to remember. The walk was not to hard to do even for my husband who has a broken back.
This is a must do excursion as it is something you will never forget. It was well worth the money. I would do it again tomorrow if I could

Great adventure
I found through this adventure 8/2/2011 that glaciers are beautiful but you get to touch and feel. The tour guide was very knowlegeable and polite. I'd do it all over again.

Good, But Wanted More for the Money
This was pricey, but we decided to do it for the "once in a lifetime" experience. The helicopter ride was scenic; flying over the glacier itself was the highlight. We did walk around the glacier for about an hour, but we pretty much walked in a large circle; it wasn't really a hike. Saw a beautiful glacial lake and a crevasse. Got a chance to drink from a glacial stream. The guides were very energetic and personable. They did an A+ job. But I don't know if I would say the overall experience was worth the money. I think if I did it again, I would choose a less expensive excursion to fly over the glaciers; but I wouldn't pay the extra to walk on it.
