Mendenhall Glacier & Wildlife Quest: Pre-book & Save $10

Experience Alaska's premier attractions, glaciers and wildlife - by land and by sea. A narrated motorcoach ride takes you to the Mendenhall Glacier. At Auke Bay, you'll board a water jet-powered catamaran specially designed for wildlife viewing. Relax in the warm and spacious main cabin with large windows, as your experienced Captain guides you through the waters of Stephen's Passage. This area is a favorite summer feeding ground for humpback whales. Once the whales have been sighted, your Captain will gently maneuver the vessel to allow exceptional viewing and photographic opportunities. Against a backdrop of snowcapped peaks, the onboard naturalist will explain the behavior and habitat of wildlife you may encounter, including sea lions, porpoises, harbor seals, bald eagles and black-tailed deer. Note: Snacks and beverages are provided. For more details about these tours please visit: www.nclwildlifetours.com In order to fully enjoy a close encounter with wildlife, we recommend you bring a warm, rainproof jacket for viewing from the observation deck. Whale sightings are guaranteed, or you'll receive $100 cash back ($50 for children) as you disembark the whale watching vessel. This tour is suitable for all ages. Price reflected on NCL.com is inclusive of the $10 Pre-book savings.

Enjoyable
The Whale Watching portion was pretty good. I've went Whale Watching in Boston in prior years. I felt the Boston area must have more regulations. There were a lot of boats in juneau that would surround the whales. The whales kept more distance than they did in Boston. I suspect that is due to number of boats and the fact that they surround them. It was still enjoyable but I do hope some regulations are implemented to protect the whales. In Boston the whales appeared to kind of put on a show for our boat--but the only other boat was way off from us.
As for the Mendenhall Glacier, that was absolutely beautiful. Would of enjoyed being there a bit earlier in the day for better lighting. It was just beautiful. Go see this place.

My favorite day
We were fortunate to be on a charter in late August 2012 with an amazing guide, Sherri. She was so enthusiastic about the whales. When we observed a "bubble netting" occur 3 times, yes, 3 times in 20 minutes, she got so excited she could barely contain herself. This let me know that we were seeing something special. I enjoyed myself much more than I thought I would. I finally put my camera down and watched the whales feed and breach the water. I left with some great memories, fantastic pictures and an appreciation for the wildlife and the people that know them best.

Worth the money
This trip was very nice from the bus ride through town to our boat where we saw many wales and wildlife. When we got off the boat th bus was waiting to take us to the glacer which was blue because of the clouds. Our guide was vere informative and the boat guide was very knoldgeable. Overall an enjoyable day

Whales were everywhere
We loved this excursion. We saw a group of about 14 whales bubble feeding and got to sit and watch this for a long time. What an experience!

Great excursion but...
My family participated in this excursion and we had a wonderful time. No complaints at all about the excursion. We were delighted with the "wildlife quest" portion but I feel the title is a bit misleading from our experience. We only saw whales and some playful sea lions. The whales were spectacular. We saw great whale activity including humpbacks breeching the water and group hunting called bubbling. This portion of the trip was amazing.
The Mendenhall glacier was the second portion of the trip. I was very impressed with the Mendenhall glacier and really enjoyed my visit, but after seeing Glacier Bay later in the same cruise the Mendenhall was unnecessary and rather anticlimactic. In all fairness, the Mendenhall portion of the trip was very enjoyable, but keep in mind that you will see better glaciers in glacier bay and that is included in your cruise fare.
I recommend the wildlife/whale watching part of the trip, but if you are on a glacier bay cruise, skip the Mendenhall and choose another excursion that will give you a different experience.

Whale Watching was Fantastic
The Whale watching portion of this tour was fantastic (even though it rained the whole time). We saw a bunch of whales, seals and sea lions and got some great pictures. The staff was friendly and very informative. The boat was exceptionally clean and well maintained. This was one of our favorite tours. As far as the Mendenhall Glacier, I wouldn't recommend this to anyone to see on any tour package. We never arrived there until 7PM, just as they were closing the Visitors Center for the night. But this glacier pales in comparison to the ones that you see from the cruise ship in Glacier Bay. You get a lot closer and see a lot more. Had we known that we would have such an impressive view of those glaciers, I would not have spent the extra money for this add on to the whale watching. Definitely not worth the extra money. My recommendation is just stick with the whale watching and save your glacier watching for your day in Glacier Bay.

Outstanding experience!!
My wife and I took this excursion on May 24, 2011. We saw some whales while abord the Norwegian Star, but we were hoping we could get closer to one of these wonderful creatures. The bus trip was fun due to the driver and her stories. Not 5 minutes into the whale watching trip a whale was sighted nearby. The captain manuvered his boat very nicely so we could get some good views. We saw many eagles along the way to the next place. The entire boat was bubbling over with excitement with each whale we encounterd. The whales were bubble netting close to the boat. We probably experienced this about 20 times. WOW!! The crew on board was wonderful. The snacks and coffee made it very pleasant. The trip to Mendenhall Glacier was a good one. This driver was very amusing. We only had 45 minutes to spend at the glacier, but we still had a very good feel for it. All in all, this was our best excursion by far.

Great Excursion!
Just returned from the June 5th sailing. My family took this excursion and was not disappointed! We saw eagles, humpback whales, the rare orcas and sea lions. The boat ride was great and the trip to Mendanhall was perfect. This excursion is worth the extra money, as it's two trips in one...which is nice considering we didn't have alot of time in port.
