Flowers & Coffee

Flowers & Coffee showcases small farms in the district of Puna that constitute the agricultural backbone of Hawaii. If you're a flower lover and coffee aficionado, this excursion is for you! First you'll start with a visit to a colorful anthodium farm that is also a clearing house for other tropical flowers like Heleconias and foliage such as Ti leaf. Walk into shade houses where the anthodium's are grown in beds on the ground and learn their history and lore. Explore a modern orchid nursery with a great variety of spectacular orchids in bloom and learn about the biology, history and economics of orchids. Walk through greenhouses viewing thousands of potted orchids on benches and see the million-gallon reservoir of rain water. Last, savor the aroma at a coffee mill where local varieties of beans, recently rated the best in the world, roasted to different stages, will be tasted. Learn about processing methods and ask any questions you have about coffee. The fragrance in the bean roasting room must be experienced to be believed.

We chose the "Flowers & Coffee" excursion because we greatly enjoy both & thought it would be wonderful. First, we ended up in a very old, dilapidated van that did not have adjustable air conditioning vents for those of us in the 3rd row of seats, we were crowded in with 3 in a seat. The poor lady next to me was hanging over most of the trip. Very uncomfortable to start.
Our tour guide, Mike, was very knowledgeable & tried to make this tour enjoyable. The first stop at the Heleconians/anthodium nursery was nice, lots of flowers to see placed around their shipping floors. The guides were good on describing the plants, some uneven walking, take care. The stop at the orchid nursery was less than what we thought it would be. It is a small business (though they do a LOT of shipping business) - It was like going through one of our local nurseries in Michigan. The woman talked too much, which made standing in one place almost unbearable. We were glad to leave that spot & move on to the coffee place. Again, it was much smaller than anticipated but the owner was informative about the process, all could sample 3 of their special coffees. of all the excursions we took, this is one we could have easily have skipped and NOT missed anything, esp. the uncomfortable ride.

Great NONtourist tour - showcasing agriculture on the Island of Hawaii - from the greenhouses to the orchids to the coffee - WONDERFUL. We got to go right into their businesses and see how it is done - fascinating for us snowbound Canadians! Our drivers Tony & Mike were amazing - shared lots of interesting tidbits about the area, were very knowledgeable about the various flowers and greenery AND brought us some smoked pork to try during the bus ride - VERY TASTY!! Hilo Coffee Mill was very informative (saw another Mill the next day which was nothing more than a tourist trip) We aren't real daredevils but wanted to see the real Hawaii - the cozy small bus that we took was a good way to do this!
