Drive across the black lava flows to the Puna District and Kilauea Volcano, where you'll hear stories of life in Kalapana from the former residents who witnessed the destruction. You'll walk across the lava flows which entomb the former village of Kalapana, and find the new black-sand beach of Kaimu. Enjoy a Hawaiian barbeque lunch at a private working macadamia nut and honey farm prepared by your guide. Learn what it's like to operate a macadamia nut farm sitting on the most active volcano in the world. After lunch, travel across the stark black lava flows to find where the lava met the sea in the 1960 eruption. Your next destination is Lava Tree State Park for a short walk, where in 1790 a lava flow covered the jungle and Ohia trees. Finally your guide will share a beautiful coastal lagoon, protected by a reef, and home to tropical fish and the occasional giant green sea turtle. Swim and explore the fascinating coastline here before you return to your ship.
