Ultimate Helicopter & Waterfall Adventure

Imagine soaring over Kilauea Volcano on a thrilling helicopter tour, driving to a remote location for a BBQ lunch overlooking a private waterfall, and enjoying a return drive that visits scenic waterfalls and tropical rainforests. You'll start by boarding your comfortable, air-conditioned aircraft and heading out towards the active volcano. Lush tropical rainforests give way to stark black lava that flows as you approach the volcano. Look for surface flows and lava entering the ocean as your pilot safely navigates the helicopter over the volcanic landscape. Then, you'll circle back and head north past Hilo. Fly over prime rainforests, laced with waterfalls. After your flight, you'll be met by your guide and head off to enjoy a Hawaiian BBQ lunch prepared by your guides while you relax in a private pavilion overlooking a beautiful waterfall in the middle of the jungle. Finally, on your return, enjoy a refreshing swim and scenic drive through Onomea Bay, with stops at Akaka Falls and Rainbow Falls. Note: Guests 250 lbs. and over are charged an additional rate to reserve two seats for safety and comfort. These spaces are capacity controlled. You will not be able to book this option online. Please call 1.866.625.1167 for assistance with these reservations. This tour is non-refundable once booked. Tour may run in reverse. Flight time is approximately 45 minutes.

Some good - some not so good
April was our guide for the land/waterfall portion of the tour and she was great. We were picked up first thing from the ship and were the first people to Rainbow Falls. Definitely the time to go there - well before the crowds. Next we went to Akaka falls, which were quite impressive - I felt like I was walking through Jurassic Park with the lush foliage. Finally we headed to a private property for swimming in a smaller waterfall and then on to a very nice pavilion for a delicious lunch that April prepared which we ate in front of another gorgeous waterfall. After lunch we were taken to Big Island Candies and after were dropped off at the airport for our helicopter tour. The helicopter tour spent too much time looking for lava (which was pretty much non-existent) and not enough time seeing other scenery along the coast. Unfortunately, the tour was listed as lasting 6 hours on the NCL website, but it lasted almost 7 hours, so we were almost an hour late getting back to the ship which caused us to miss our next tour. I'm not sure who was responsible for the times listed, so if you are on this tour and want to do another tour afterwards, verify the return times with the operator. All in all, the first half was a great tour. The helicopter tour left something to be desired, but it could have just been the pilot and or weather that day.

By far the BEST TOUR EVER!!!!!
This was the best excursion my wife and I went on throughout the whole cruise. The land portion was beautiful and our guide Jesse was extremely friendly and informative. The waterfalls were grand and while the water was a little chilly it was at the same time refreshing. The BBQ was delicious and filling, consisting of fall off the bone guava glazed ribs and tender juicy BBQ chicken with pineapple coleslaw, herb butter corn and cucumber salad. mmm mmm good. The short hike to the water fall was beautiful and filled with all kinds of native plants and birds, we even saw a hawaiian hawk soaring above head!!! The helicopter portion was just as good with grand over head views of the puuoo vent, kalapana lava flows, kilauea volcano, many gorgeous waterfalls and the little town of hilo and its bay. definitely worth every cent and then some!!! great for the whole family!!!

Very disappointed
We booked this excursion following the previous reviews. Three families went with us and we all agreed that the description was uninformative. the water falls were not spectaculars at all, the BBQ lunch was a total disaster, consisting in three little ribs if you were lucky to get them at the beginning and pieces of meat that at the end we all agreed that were chicken, and a salad. come on... a BBQ lunch to an american? to be able to get to the waterfall that you may actually get into it was a 30 minutes ride, so bumpy that our backs were hurting, even the driver was ashamed, there is walking included to get there and then back to the place to have "lunch?", never were informed to wear comfortable walking shoes, it is very over prized, for the experience that you get, Not worthy at all. The helicopter part was very good though. If I knew better, should have gone in the helicopter only excursion.

Best Excursion
Although pricey, this excursion was worth every penny. What an amazing way to experience the volcano - flying over the active crater. When we visited the big island, the lava was not flowing to the ocean, so this was the only way to see volcanic activity. It was the experience of a lifetime for all of us, from my 73 year old in-laws to my 9 and 11 year old children. The waterfall adventure was beautiful, and gave us a great snapshot of the Hilo area with our very informative guide, April.
