Hilo Bay Waterfall & Kayak

Your adventure begins at a black-sand beach in the heart of Hilo, just a short distance from the cruise ship pier. Enjoy a great time on the water with fun guides and amazing views and look out for a glimpse of the Mauna Kea Summit. Hilo is America's wettest city, so be prepared for plenty of rainbows and a lush tropical coastline. Your kayaking excursion will take you out past Coconut Island and along Hilo's shoreline with magnificent views of the Wailoa Park Estuary and the Wailuku River Waterfall, where the 18-mile river reaches the ocean. Note: Participants must be at least 10 years of age and weigh no more than 250 lbs. This tour is not recommended for those with back problems or heart conditions. Wear a swimsuit and bring a towel. Tour is weather dependent.

Good, not great
We were unable to go on the normal kayaking route do to high waves. The route we did take was nice, but I feel we missed out on the real sights.
After kayaking, we got into a van to go to rainbow falls. The van broke down about two blocks from the falls, we walked the rest of the way and returned to the ship by taxi.
The guides were very good, and these problems were not their fault. They did an excellent job of making the best out of a bad situation.
I would like to try this excursion again but on the normal route, so I could give a better review.

boring and safety concerns
It had rained the night before we arrived. They said we had to take an alternate route. The route was boring into the back bay. Saw nothing interesting. Had to take a bus to Rainbow Falls. Jumped on and off the small van in less than 10 minutes. Note: The owner and his wife were nice. But, not really knowledgeable tour guides. And, they were not very good about safety. There was an older couple who were slower paddlers. There was a light rain on the way back...not enough to be a problem for any of us. But, both the husband and wife guides took off paddling fast back to the shore...Neither stayed behind with the group to be sure everyone was okay. I stayed back to escort the older older couple back in case they had a problem. They were fine....but the guides were so far ahead of them that they would not know if anything was going on.
