Explore Volcanoes National Park and learn about Hawaii's Goddess of Fire, Madame Pele, as you drive along the crater's rim as allowed by park rangers; due to activity, parts may be closed. Standing at just over 4,000 feet, Kilauea is not the tallest volcano on the Big Island, but it's certainly the most active. Pass the Halemaumau Fire Pit and the Kilauea Iki Crater before stopping at the Thurston Lava Tube, where a short walk gives you the opportunity for an up-close view of an extinct lava tube. This tour also visits the Hawaii Volcano Observatory and Jaggar Museum. Finally, end your day with a visit to Big Island Candies where you can sample the tasty treats and take some home.
Note: While at Volcanoes National Park, you won't see molten lava. Thurston Lava Tube is not wheelchair accessible due to uneven pathways and steps. An additional optional shopping stop may be provided.

Unfortunately, about 10 minutes before we arrived in the park, the VOG, not fog, rolled in and we were unable to see anything in the crater or the general area. The museum was very interesting, and standing above a steam vent and walking through the Thurston Lava Tube were highlights. Our guide was very informative and passed around lots of pictures during our ride. Just wish the weather had cooperated.
This was quite the journey! We enjoyed the overall trip, as our guide was friendly and educational. We were able to walk through a lava tunnel, get a facial of natural steam straight from the land itself, and visit a museum dedicated to volcanic research.
Having heard that this was the top destination for shore excursions on this cruise, if not for all tourists to the Big Iland, we were excited to go on the trip. Although it was rather rainy on the way to the national park, the rain let up when we arrived at the visitor center adjacent tothe active valcanoe. We also stopped at several interresting old lava flow areas and steam vents. The walk through an extincet lava tunnel was also very interresting. The only down-side of the trip was a rather lackluster narrative by our driver who was more intrrested in telling about his own life and the down-side of Hilo. I don't think that the Hilo Chanber of Commerce would have been pleased with his narrative. Otherwise, it was an enjoyable trip.
Our bus driver, Sharon gave a great tour. I always admire their driving skills in tight spots. She is knowledgable about the volcanos and enthusiastic in in sharing her infornation, Seeing the crater and lava flow fields was a once in a lifetime experience, Highly recommend, where else are you going to see this?
We did excursions every day, and this was our least enjoyable/worthwhile one. Overpriced for what you see, and our driver was quite uninteresting to listen to. The crater views are maginficent, but next time we'd save the money and choose a helicopter tour or something else. Would only recommend this tour if you're not seeing any other craters. But if you've seen other craters of volcanoes, save your money.....
This is a great tour if you need a break from adventure and would just like a nice drive through the Hawaiian countryside. Definetly a nice way to see an active volcano. A great way to go since you only have one day at this port that way you won't have to be stressed about renting a car and getting back to the boat on time, let the bus driver do the worrying for you! Plus you will get lots of cool information about the volcano and surrounding areas. My husband and I had adventerous excursions booked for the majority of the trip so this was a nice way to unwind and just relax. Lava tube at the end is really cool, kids will love this tour. Lots of getting on and off the bus, but still lots of fun!
Great and easy excursion. You do see an active volcano but you only see the steam coming out of the crater and the ground along the road. You will go from a barren moon like area to a lush rainforest in minutes. The lava tube area is gorgeous..

Well Worth it!!
This tour was fabulous! the driver, Sharon was very informative about the things that we saw on the way. She knew so much about the Hawaiian culture and made it interesting with her singing. Lunch is provided on this tour. Make sure to bring a light jacket as it gets windy and cold at the top of the crater...
If I were to do this again, I would rent a car and do it on my own. The bus we rode on had a broken air conditioner so the 45 minute there was HOT! We ended up switching buses but that caused us to lose time which we were already short on. Everywhere we stopped the driver would give us 5-20 minutes...what were we possibly going to see in 5 minutes? However, at the candy store on the way home, we were given extra time...I can buy chocolate anywhere, I will rarely have the opportunity to see volcanoes again...so a little disappointed...

Educational for the whole family
My family and I enjoyed the trip to Volcanoes National Park and our tour guide, Walter, was very informative about the park and the surrounding area. The Lava Tube was really neat to see and go through. Seeing the extent of how far lava can travel through the park made it very interesting. The tour becomes very interesting when the guide can tell you about the area, this case the Big Island, in which you are travelling and not just the specific spot you are visiting.
Really enjoyed our tour guide who seemed to know alot about Hawaiian culture. It was so interesting to see how warm and sunny it was driving thru the Japanese garden near the port and then as we approached Volcanoes Natl Park how it became a tropical rainforest...defin bring a hat and rainjacket and closed toe shoes!! Loved walking thru the rainforest and thru the lava tube...you can easily trip...I did...but makes for great photo ops. Loved the stops to get out and walk around on lava flows and look at craters and steam vents. Of course the coolest thing was being at the museum and seeing the steam from Kileau and getting to be so close to photograph it. It was amazing.
This was a nice trip, little slow and sometimes boring. The trip from the ship to the volcano was long about 45mins but the guide was very knowledgable and told lots of stories having lived their all her life. We stopped at the Candy factory on the way for a small break. When we finally reached the park we saw lots of neat things. The lava tubes were amazing. Really enjoyed that part. The volcano had erupted somewhat weeks before we got there so apparently there wasn't as much to see as there is at other times. Just lots of smoke. I think we were the youngest people on this trip. But I'm glad we did it as you never know when your going to get to go back. If your looking for something exciting and thrilling ...this is not for you.
This was a GOOD excursion. Very educational and informative. We were disappointed that our cruise did NOT get to see the lava flow though (just not any flowing now). It was windy and cool so I would recommend taking a jacket and wearing sneakers for the walk in the harden lava and the lava tube. The bus driver was very informative. We could have done without the stop at the candy shop but the drive through the town to it was very pretty and informative also.
