Deserted Island Beach & Snorkel

Embark on an eco-adventure tour to Peterson's Cay National Park on board Sunshine, a 45-foot motorized catamaran. Here, you'll be briefed on safety instructions and snorkeling. Next, cruise along the shoreline to a shallow open coral reef, home to hundreds of colorful fish. You can lie right on the surface of the water and see a whole new world. After snorkeling at the reef, a short boat ride will bring you to the 1 1/2 acre island of Peterson's Cay. Here you can sunbathe, swim, relax or even enjoy more snorkeling time on the sandy beach. Then, you'll have lunch and witness a native conch cultural demonstration. Enjoy complimentary and unlimited Bahama Mama, sweetened ice tea and lemonade. Note: Participants must be at least 5 years of age, weigh no more than 300lbs. and in good health conditions. Guests must sign a waiver release form. Snorkel equipment is included. Wear sunscreen and bring a towel. Lunch includes unlimited Bahama Mama, ice tea, lemonade, seasonal fruits, chicken served with Johnny Cake, corn salad, chips and dessert.

Not a bad trip, but overhyped
The trip was overall ok. However, the description needs some clarification. After a short van ride (our guide provided lots of information as we went through), we kayaked to the deserted island, which was very restricted due to sharp coral inhabiting most of the island. The snorkeling portion was very nice but over time got a little tedious. People tend to bump into each other, and the guide cannot effectively address everyone, so people are only dazzled at the colors of the fish but have no idea what they are looking at. After the snorkeling, we were welcomed to iced tea, lemonade and water. The food was either PB&J or deli meats on bread, all food we made ourselves (do not expect the fancy meals the description provides). Overall, the kayaking is fun if you and your partner work well together, but the trip could extend for longer than planned if another group (or you!) do not work well. I personally think the trip is a little overpriced, especially if you bring your own snorkeling equipment, but it could be improved by maybe some visuals of fish we can see in the water and some better food. Bring something warm, the private island gets VERY WINDY and after coming out of the water you will want to be bundled in something!

Great adventure for the whole family
This excursion was a great way to spend a day for the whole family. Suitable for all ages and levels of snorkel experience. Hosts (guides) were very relaxed, patient, and competent. And, they were fun!!! Beach was lovely, no crowds. Water clear. We had a great time, returned, happy, well-fed, would love to do it again someday.

Fantastic! Would Do It Again and Again
This was hands down our best shore excursion that we went on during our trip. T.K., K.K. and Griffin were fantastic. They made sure everyone enjoyed their time and they were very heavy handed with their drinks. They took us to an excellent spot on the reef to see all sorts of fishies! The water was a little rough, but it was still fantastic. They did an excellent job of showing us a great time. Their food was fantastic. They made little brownie desserts that were highly addicting and it was just great!

I went in December of 2012. The boat initially anchors off a very nice reef and you snorkel off the boat. Good snorkeling here and you are not rushed. After a short boat ride, you are able to spend a few hours ashore at Peterson Cay. You can lay on the beach or swim, but there is no snorkeling here. The crew will cook lunch ashore and serve up rum drinks. Drinks are included on the boat ride back. All in all, an enjoyable day (but I had great weather).

Best Excursion on the Trip
This was our favorite excursion (and we also did a dolphin one.) After reading the reviews, we booked this and we were so happy that we did. People on the other snorkeling tours offered, rode the same bus as us, left from the same dock and snorkeled at the same place. All of the boats left the snorkel spot at the same time and then we headed to a beach where we could snorkel on our own (although the water was very shallow and if you kicked up sand it was hard to see anything, but still cool things to be seen), we watched them harvest conch and then they put it into conch salad and serve it with our bbq chicken lunch. It was very good and there were plenty of drinks and food. They give you life jacket to wrap around your waist so you can “lazy snorkel” as they called it. I am not a strong swimmer and it made the experience awesome! They will sell you a disposable underwater camera on the boat and it was the same price as buying it at rite-aid. We borrowed an underwater camera from a friend and found it to be a great way to capture those memories.
We brought our water shoes, bamboo beach mats and towels with us on the boat and we were very happy that we had. The beach is rocky and there are lots of twigs from the trees. Other people commented and wished they had beach mats to put down. There are no tables so you eat while sitting on your towel. They set up beach volleyball but no one played during our trip, everyone was exploring the shore line or snorkeling during their time on the beach.
When back at the dock, they walk you back to the bus stop and hand the group over to the bus company representative. We had about an hour to kill in the straw market before our bus arrived. We made it back to the ship with plenty of time to spare. If we were to go back to Freeport (Grand Bahama Island,) we would book this excursion again and again. The guys on the boat were very friendly and helpful. Pay attention during the conch demonstration and you might just win a conch shell on the way back to shore. We were glad that we took some cash with us because the guys did a great job, so we left a tip in the tip jar.

Worth the price!! They take you first to a coral reef area where you are able to snorkel from the boat (watch out for jellies, though!) Then you go to a deserted beach (there were a few locals, but still very nice), where you can snorkel or just sunbathe until they serve lunch. My boyfriend also really enjoyed the unlimited Bahama Mama!

sun and fun
Our family went on this (3 kids:13, 11, 9). The snorkel was appx. 1 hour plenty of time to see the reef. The boat had beverages, snacks, and were extremely helpful and fun. The travel time to the beach is lengthy so be prepared for this. Also, there is no bathroom on this excursion. Not on the boat, not on the island. Bring lots of sunscreen, hat, swim shirts- b'cuz you will be in the sun all day. The food was great! Great for first time snorkelers, too.

Awesome!
We've been on a few cruises around the world, and this was one of our all time favorite excursions. The guys do an incredible job making everyone comfortable and making it fun. It was some of the best snorkeling we've experienced. The boat ride to the island was beautiful and relaxing. We had the island to ourselves with a nice lunch. The team went the extra mile to add some nice bonus touches beyond the planned activities. It was a great highlight to the cruise for my wife, our college- aged son and me. It was a fantastic day-trip, worth every dime. Pick this one with confidence!

Drew the Short Straw on this One
I participated in this excursion with my wife and my 14 year old son.Of the three excursions we did on our 5 day cruise, this was the one that we all wish we had not chosen to do. The Captain was not very informative and he did not give any kind of information or history on the boat ride over to the snorkel site. I have been on lots of snorkel tours where the Captain or a crew member gives information, history or just talks to everyone on the ride to the site. We only snorkeled for about an hour or less, then it was off to the deserted island. They made a barbeque lunch which was OK. My wife didn't like it. We were not allowed to do any more snorkeling so therefore there was not much to do on the desserted island, after all, "It is deserted". On the ride back we were taken on a tour of homes and a small harbour. It seemed as though the Captain was just killing time because we kept going in circles. I think he was trying not to get us back too early. To be honest with you alll I wanted to do was get back to our Cruise Ship. I would not reccommend this tour at all. We could have done better things with the money spent. It is a shame, this is my first time ever posting a negative review.
