Start with a panoramic drive to view of the San Felipe de Barajas Fortress, situated outside the walled city. This monumental fort is considered to be the most outstanding feat of Spanish military engineering in the new world. After a quick drive through the narrow streets of the walled city, you'll continue along the coastline to La Boquilla fisherman village. Embark on a leisurely canoe ride through the mangrove tunnels across the Swamp of the Virgin. Visit the mangroves at La Cienaga de Juan Polo, where a great diversity of birds such as Kingsfisher, White heron, Common Laura, Pink Spatula and Pelicans live. Relax as you enjoy the beautiful flora and fauna that encompasses this fascinating eco-system.
Note: Wear comfortable clothing and shoes and bring sunscreen and a hat. The last portion of this tour is a canoe ride only; guests do not get to paddle the canoe.

The bus was nice and the tour guide spoke good English . There was a short stop for pictures at the fort. Very difficult to manevuer around the vendors. My husband took a picture of a women all decked out in colorful garb and carrying a fruit basket on her head. She then tollorwed him around until he finally gave her a $1. So do not take pictures of locals unless you want to pay them. The canoes held 4 people each. Life jackets were provided. Provided a picture of the canoe to make your own decision. The local who paddled the canoe along could not speak English so no questions could be answered. You did get to stop and watch a local fisherman; all the boats stopped at the same time. After that, you were expected to tip the fisherman. There were children trying to sell seashells for a $1. I admit I wanted one very beautiful one, but how do you buy one from one 4-6 year old and not from all the others (about 6-8), so just said no. The excursion was suppose to be about 2.5 hours I believe. Everything was done in about 1.5 hours so the tour guide had the driver tour us around the city with a stop off for shopping. My husband and I just stayed on the cool bus. The tour guide himself was very nice and even made another stop because one of the customers on board must have been looking for a specific liquor.
