Kohunlich Mayan Ruins: Pre-book & Save $10

At the ruins, your guide takes you through this breathtaking site named after the majestic cahoon palm tree that grows fronds up to 40 feet tall. Kohunlich Ruins include a sunken palace, acropolis, ball court, courtyards and the main attraction - the masks. Climb the pyramid-like temple for a view of the unique 10-foot high sculpted masks of the sun god 'Kinich Ahau.' Built before 500 A.D., these marvelous masks still retain some of their original colored stucco. Note: There is a government tax of $5-8 US for the use of video cameras at the site. No tripods and/or professional video cameras are allowed. A boxed lunch and a complimentary bottle of water is included. Online price is inclusive of the Pre-book and Save offer.

Unforgetable!
Warning: this trip is probably not for people who have no interest in history, or ancient civilizations. Now if you are still reading, you've got to see this place! This complex is big! And they have more to excavate! I walked thru every structure. I stood in the ball court. I climbed the unbelievably steep stairs of the temple where sacrifice was made. The temple is in great shape, and there are five large masks carved into the temple that look good for 1500 years old. The guide was great! She was well informed, and had props during her lecture on the drive. They did provide us with food and water for the trip. It was a sack lunch, and was bland. We had plenty of time to explore the grounds. Bear in mind the drive is 4 hours round trip, but it goes fast. And the site is hot! If archeology thrills you like it does me, then those are small sacrifices, pardon the pun.

Good Excursion Overall
We had very good guides for this excursion, and that can make a big difference on a long tour like this one. Very long and bumpy bus ride to ruins. Guides did an interesting "show and tell" concerning Mayan culture on the bus on the way to the site. Site itself was large enough to be interesting, with the Mask Temple the highlight. Lunch bag given on the bus at the start of the tour was rather lame, and we fed the sandwich to a starving-looking dog we saw getting back on the bus for the trip back to the ship. You can climb the ruins at this site. We had no problems with heat or insects in January.

Too Long on the Bus
The Ruins were great but it takes 2 hrs each way on a bus to get there and then we spent an hour at the site and then another 2 hrs back to the port.

Great family shore excursion
Our group included 15 people between 13 and 91 years old. We each enjoyed this site.
Our tour guide was great. The bus ride was long, but it was relaxing to see the sights and listen to the cultural information given by the tour guide. I would suggest you stash a few granola bars in a day pack since the box lunch wasn't all that great.
The ruins are good ones to visit especially if you or a member of your party have mobility issues. My 91 year old mother-in-law used her wheel chair at this site, and enjoyed it greatly. I use a cane for walking distances, and had no problem walking throughout Kohunlich.

Yes, Go!
Long drive, but I took knitting! Got to see the countryside, and small towns. The ruins were amazing! I wasn't expecting such a huge area, and the guide (Ricardo) was knowledgeable. He could have been more active during the drive, but overall, I enjoyed it all.

memorable site
This site is really IN the jungle, unadorned, and natural, barely cut out of the denseness. Lots of places to climb and explore, and considerable walking, one hill to climb. Appears it will develop more over time. No shops, just a bathroom on site. The bus was cramped, the trip too long. Jesus, our guide, was long winded. Take food and water. The bag lunch was awful. I'm out of shape and made the tour with some difficulty. I'd go again if they changed that very cramped bus. The ruins themselves were lovely.

Time consuming
We enjoyed it but the travel time is a bit long. Two hours each way and only 2/3 hours at the Ruins. The lunch is poor. For the price give me more then a sandwich.

first ruins
First time at a ruins. Tour guide an excellent teacher and very informative. Unfortunately there is a 2 hour bus ride there, and another 2 hours back. Bus had a coating on the windows so everything was blurry on the trip. Bag lunch was adequate but nothing stellar.

The bus ride was a little longer than expected, but our guide, Jesus, was great and we had our lunch to eat. The lunch consisted of a ham and cheese sandwich, banana, nuts, and fruit drink. We were not afraid to eat the food and had no ill effects from it. You're not supposed to take food off the ship and can be fined for carrying contraband. The park was well-kept and beautiful - and had working restrooms. Jesus gave us a wonderful tour and taught us an ancient game. The pyramids and masks were interesting and we got some great pictures, even though the renovators blocked some of the view. I would take this tour again. Be sure to take sunglasses, sturdy shoes, and bug spray.

Local guide Jesus (Mayan heritage) got the excursion off to a great start with very interesting information on the 2 hour bus trip to Kohunlich.
Have your camera at the ready as you travel through many communities with your guide providing the answers to all your 'what is that?' questions.
Guided tour of the ruins (by Jesus) was excellent and provided a good mix of free time to roam / explore the ruins and group talk.
Great value for $

Long Day but Worth it
Read the other reviews and they were spot on. Very educational. Glad we booked this - no regrets.
It is a 2hr 15min tour bus ride each way. Sack lunch is a room temp ham and cheese sandwich on white with mayo handed to you as you board the bus. Kids liked the candy and fruit drink. Soy covered peanuts were different / unique. No, I did not eat the sandwich. I packed it away and disposed of it after we left the bus.
Our guide was very educated and took pride when sharing about the Mayan culture. Bus trip was comfortable. Our guide kept us busy during the trip to the ruins. He lectured, answered questions, and passed around maps and photos. The ruins are amazing - wished we had more time to explore further into the park. We were able to climb up on most of the structures. If your photo/video equipment looks professional you might have to pay extra. Leave the tri-pod at home. We did not have problems with our small digital cameras. Bus trip back was quieter but guide still engaged in conversation.
One bottle of water is provided once you arrive at the ruins. We filled our water bottles up in our cabin for extra H2O on all of our excursions; it saved us a few dollars. The driver sold Coke, diet Coke, Gatorade, and beer for $2 each for the return trip. We were told not to bring food ashore but we took snacks (Shh... our secret). 3-15-12

Definitely Go!!
We decided on this excursion based on the reviews for the other ruins, and this was worth EVERY penny!! Our guide Leticia was very personable, VERY knowledgeable and brought a lot of interactive stuff (maps, trinkets, etc.). She made the 2 hour bus ride go very quickly! We had plenty of time to shop afterward, and though the bag lunch leaves something to be desired, the thought is still nice (but we brought our own anyway - after hiking around, you'll need it!). We went in January - no bug spray necessary. Would do it again!

I recommend this!
This was the best excursion of the cruise. Better bring something along for lunch as this one is not acceptable. Having read other reviews, I opened my sandwich to check it out and found a hair! (short, black, not mine) Otherwise, the tour was great and our guide, Alejandro, was informative and personable. We didn't need bug spray in January. The bottle of cold water was especially welcome in the warm, humid weather. I recommend this excursion to everyone except young children.

Awesome
This was our families first adventure to a Mayan ruin. It was everything I thought that it would be. The guide made the 2 hour bus ride there go by very quickly. The ruins themselves were smaller than I thought that they'd be but I attribute that to my ideas based on what I've seen on television. Other than my perception, it was awesome. The Temple Of Masks was really something to see. One warning though, you're going to definately get your exercise with this excursion. We were all exhausted by the time we left. This is not a leisurely stroll and should have been at a Level 3 or Level 4...not a Level 2. Also, I don't know what all of the complaining about the lunch was. It was a ham & cheese sandwich on white bread, a type of candied nut and a drink. Maybe not the greatest but not as terrible as some made it out to be. Side note: we went in January. There wasn't a single bug to be found. We never used the bug spray.

Our tour guide, Luis, was fantastic! The best guide we had our whole trip. He was well informed, spoke clearly, and was fun to boot! The trip to the ruins, aboard a very comfortable air conditioned bus, was about an hour and a half. They give you your sack lunch as you board the bus. It was a bologna sandwich with cheese, a bag of chips, peanuts, a candy bar and kool aid type juice drink. You are given a bottle of water upon arrival at the ruins. The drive to the ruins, while long, was nice and Luis spent a good ammount of time telling us what to expect and gave us general information about the area of Mexico we were in, about the people, the economy, the plants and animals, etc. He was, again, fantastic! The ruins were awesome. We got to climb all over them. Whatever we dared to do, we did. Luis provided tons of educational information and at the end of the tour, on the ride back to port, offered us some packages he had put together with a couple souviners because the tour is long and you only get to run through the port/gift shop area. Don't expect to have time to shop or eat at the port. Costa Maya is not a town, it is only a port with shops catering to cruisers. I enjoyed the drive to the ruins because we got to see "real Mexico" and it's people and living conditions, and its beauty. My 7 year old had a blast at the ruins and was intrigued by the cultural stories that went along with them. I was affraid he was too young to find it interesting but he loved it! I very much recommend this tour for families and history enthusiasts. This ruins tour was far more professional than the following tour we took in Belize to another ruins site.

If you want to take beautiful photos of Myan ruins this is your tour. The gounds were very park like and well maintained.
The trip to get there (and back) is long, over 2 hours. The box lunch is really a bagged snack. Sandwich, juice, cookie, and bag of peanuts.
The driver has a side business and will sell you soda at the site.
The tour guide sells trinkets at the end as well.
The tour guide was knowledgable and interesting, the driver was less than professional but your results will vary I'm sure.

Too far away
The actual site was amazing. That is not my issue. Problem was it takes a full 2 hours and 15 minutes to get there. The bus was air conditioned and had a bathroom but there was no running water. The lunch was seriously a hand made dry sandwich with a single slice of balogne. I am not sure who made it and who packed it in a plastic baggie. I only saw a few people brave enough to actually eat it. It is not the "box lunch" as quoted in the description. This is important because you are gone all day and there is no where to get any other food. Bring your own snacks. When we finally got there, the tour guide who I am sure is a nice fellow, kept talking and talking, when it was clear from the body language of those around us we wanted to be able to go explore. We did not have near enough time at the actual site to take it all in. We had to skip several areas in order to get back to the bus for the long ride to the pier. Once we got near the end, the bus driver made a forcefull plea for tips and then stood outside sort of blocking the door of the bus to try and intimidate us into giving tips. My family loved the ruins themselves but hated everything else about this excursion.

Worth the ride
The bus trip is crazy long, but worthwhile when you consider that ruins that are over 2,000 years old await you. The ruins didn't disappoint! Our guide was great and had a ton of information to share. Our only complaint was that the bag lunch was really terrible. We're not picky eaters, but this lunch was really bad.

Excellent Tour!
This was an exceptional tour and I greatly appreciated our tour guide, Jesus. He truly told the story of the Mayans (he himself was part Mayan) and brought their history to life. It was incredibly educational and he was very entertaining as well as informed of the topics he spoke about. The ruins were beautiful and the masks at the site were incredible. Jesus told us about everything, even the small details that many would overlook. I enjoyed the story about the truth behind 2012 as well as Jesus's top 5 tequilas. Lunch was nothing special. It was very hot when we were there. Also, it may not be an ideal tour for those who are disabled or out of shape.
