Rome – More than Highlights!!!

We got much more than highlights on our tour of Rome! It was a truly a great day with unforgettable memories. Rome is a couple of hours from the port, so our guide provided a continual commentary on the history, culture, and local sites as we made our way to the capital city of Italy. In Rome, we picked up a local guide for our trip into the city. Our guide and driver accommodated requests to do a drive by of the Colosseum. Like most tourist areas, Rome was pretty busy (a.k.a. very crowded) with tour groups. Fortunately, the NCL local tour company uses an audio tour guide system where every guest has a radio receive and ear piece and the tour guide uses a microphone with transmitter. It works great in a crowd! You can hear your guide, while still have some freedom to walk around and take pictures.
It was like being back in ancient Rome with 60,000 spectators filling arena watching the gladiators fight. Then it was on to Trevi Fountain. After our guide provided a history of the fountain, we had ample time to take photos and cast our coins into the fountain (to ensure that we return to Rome on another NCL cruise!) Then, it was on to the Pantheon. Here, you need to lay (discretely) on the floor and take the requisite picture of the inside of the dome. We then traveled into Piazza Navona where we had time for a lovely pizza lunch at one of the sidewalk cafes. We enjoyed watching some of the local artists paint and musicians play contemporary music. After lunch, we traveled by bus to St. Peter’s Square. Here’s where our tour deviated from the printed itinerary. Our guide actually took us on a walking tour inside St. Peter’s Basilica. Now… the line to get into the Basilica was about 45 minutes long and there was no shade… so be prepared. The bottle neck is the security check (x-ray and metal detectors) at the entrance. The interior of St. Peter’s was breathtaking and well worth the wait. Since our guide took us into the Basilica, she provided an extensive commentary on the Basilica. As we exited, had a good photo opportunity with the Swiss Guard. There was still time for some souvenir shopping before heading back to the bus for the trip back to the ship. This was a day and tour to be remembered.

take another excursion
I agree with the other review, we wasted too much time @ a rest stop, not able to use restroom. Our tour guide spoke broken English, NEVER held her sign up & ran through Rome. We could never catch up & when we did, I asked where the restroom was! She did not understand, until someone else said "bathroom". She told to find a BAR & I had 5 minutes.
Hope NCL's reads these reviews. Sailed with NCL 9 times, never had this happen!

lots of problems
This was a disappointment to our party along with many people on our bus. the first thing that went wrong was the comfort break at the auto-grill just before entering Rome, There were approx: 20 other coaches and a queue for the ladies restroom that was at least 100 mtrs long, many were using the trees and hedges!! when in Rome we went passed all the sights while on the coach and got off to visit the Trevi fountain, this was packed with people we had 15 mins before moving on and the guide we had now picked up in Rome failed to point out where the nearest restrooms were, The bus guide showed two of my party were to go , this led to us being way behind the main group, when we caught them up we were then told off by the Rome guide this as you can imagine went down very well !! the guide then proceeded to lead us along many crowded streets at breakneck speed, by this time we had all realised that we had managed to get the runt of the litter as a guide. Further words were exchanged later in the day. All in all there is to much to try and do in the time allowed and having a bad guide in Rome spoiled it.

Great tour if it is your first time in Rome and you only have one day to see as many things as you can in this beautiful city! We were able to see many highlights. Our guide was very knowledgeable. I felt we saw the main areas of the city and had a small time to visit several places. Good value too for what you were able to see (especially if you pre-book and saved $10). This tour was also the right pace & speed to keep our 8 year old son interested. Our favorite NCL shore excursion of this trip.
