Land Rover Jungle Tour

This tour offers an opportunity to enjoy the awesome natural beauty of the rainforest, uninhabited jungle rivers and caves once used by the ancient Mayans who inhabited this region. You'll depart your ship on a high-speed boat for the Sabun River. Once on the river, the boat will wind its way upstream along the jungle-covered banks, a sight directly from an Indiana Jones movie. After approximately 45 minutes, the boat will arrive at the Landings, a secluded farm located on a peninsula by the river. You'll have a short break to visit the farm and get familiarized with the 4 x 4 Land Rover which will take you on the next leg of your journey to the Mayan Groto Caves. The Land Rover, which is famous for jungle driving, is the perfect vehicle for the 50-minute drive through the lowlands and into the jungle mud trails. Once at the base camp, your guide will give you local knowledge as he leads your small group on a traverse over a foot suspension bridge across the river. After a short walk through the dense rainforest where many species of huge trees can be seen, you'll arrive at the beginning of the cave experience. The first cave tunnels through the mountain and emerges into a tropical bowl with cliffs on all sides. The Mayans used this location as a sanctuary with protective walls still evident. Within the bowl there are many caves to explore each with different stages of stalactite and stalagmite growth. After caving, you'll have an opportunity to swim in the cool river, relax, and have a snack before boarding a jungle truck for the return trip to Belize City. Note: Participants must be between the ages of 8 years of age and 65 years of age and weight less than 250 lbs. Guests must be able to drive manual/stick shift transmissions and show drivers license. If you have any previous heart conditions, back or leg problems or are pregnant, this tour is not for you.

NOT what the review makes it seem
We took this tour on February 13, 2013 from the NCL Star.
The day begins with a boat ride from the pier to the river where the tour guide, Aubrey, will provide you with a tarp to sit on and hold above your head to prevent yourself from getting soaked. Then you will be up for a relaxing float down the river, which is very calm. You will then arrive at someone's farm where you purchase a meal for $5 (which was delicious) or get various local things from the local women.
Next is the Land Rover portion of the tour. The Land Rovers are nearly disfunctional and offer no comforts at all. You will drive down the dirt (gravel) roads on farm to the highway and up the road to the cave tubing.
At the end of the Land Rover portion of the tour, you will end up at a place very similar to the place where you boarded the Land Rover and await your turn to go into the cave "system." A guide will walk you across a very unstable suspension bridge and through the jungle into a cave. Inside the cave, you'll see stalagtites and stalagmites and the occassional fruit bat and that's about it. You will then board a bus back to the cruise terminal.
Overall, this tour was a great disappointment. We have cruised with NCL several times (we are gold Latitudes) and this tour ranked at the bottom of the of all of tours we've taken. I would recommend skipping this one at all costs.

From the guides to the adventure, this excursion is excellent. It includes hiking, caving, suspension bridge, driving land rovers, speed boat and wildlife. I had not seen a crocodile before or a insect bat. I would do this one again. I took several pictures and they are postcard worthy. Our guide to the caves did a great job of teaching us about the plants and the history. Our guide on the bus filled us with information about Belize. The guide on the speed boat kept us safe and told us of the wildlife. All around great adventure!!

Wow! What an adventure!
My whole family loved this excursion. One thing we loved was the knowledge of each of the guides along the way. On the river, the guides were able to answer any question and point out anything we asked for. We had a guide with us on the Land Rover who was able to tell us about his life in Belize. Getting to drive the Land Rovers was a blast! The guide leading us to and in the caves was able to tell us about the botanicals along the trail. My husband and daughter even got to try termites! The free flowing rum punch and fresh fruit was a nice way to end the day. I also liked that local village women were on hand to sell a more filling meal at a very reasonable cost. Talk about authentic foods! We will recommend this excursion to those who want adventure and culture bound into one trip.
