Best Of Cairo Overnight - Per Person, Double Occupancy

This tour is 2 days / 1 night. You start in Alexandria on Day 1, spend the night in Cairo, and return to Alexandria on Day 2 to rejoin your ship. Day 1: Depart from the pier for a journey through desert scenery and reclaimed, cultivated land, reaching the outskirts of Africa's largest city, the legendary Al Qahira, internationally known as the teeming metropolis of Cairo. Sit back, relax and listen as your guide tells you about the history and culture of a timeless land on a journey lasting approximately three hours. Lunch will be served afterward at a leading restaurant. Then proceed to the Giza Plateau, where the only remaining Wonder of the Ancient World is found, the imposing Pyramids of Giza. You'll have some free time at the pyramids to explore and enjoy this magnificent site as well as having unique photo opportunities. Continue down the valley where the mighty Sphinx bears witness to the passage of time. Let your imagination reflect on the golden days of the Pharaohs as you gaze at this mighty monument. Bring back with you wonderful memories to reflect upon for a very long time to come. In the early evening depart to the Papyrus institute where the procedure of manufacturing the oldest paper in the world will be demonstrated for you. You'll have some time to shop for your favorite souvenirs before proceeding to the Giza Plateau to attend the English version of the ‘Son et Lumiere'. Here seated in front of the Sphinx under a star-studded sky, the Sound and Light performance brings the magnificent history and achievements of the ancient Egyptians to life as the illuminated pyramids and the mysterious Sphinx dominate the surrounding darkness. To end the night, sail on the River Nile, the same timeless waterway traversed by Pharaohs, Queens and Nobles thousands of years ago. Enjoy a sumptuous buffet dinner in elaborate interiors as you glide past Cairo's waterfront landmarks, while a folkloric presentation and belly dancing take place for your entertainment. You'll then drive back to your hotel for a well-earned night's sleep. Day 2: After breakfast and check-out, your first stop brings you to the Citadel of Saladin where you'll have panoramic views of the city of Cairo. Driving through the ‘City of the Dead' towards the Citadel, the architectural and the surreal surroundings will capture your imagination. Visit the spectacular Alabaster Mosque of Mohamed Ali and continue to Liberty Square, the heart of downtown. Continue on a drive down to Egypt's first capital, Memphis. Here visit the ruins of the Temple of Ptah, the fallen colossal statue of King Ramses the 2nd, and the Alabaster Sphinx of King Amenophis the 2nd. Drive to the oldest, ancient cemetery of Sakkara and see the Step Pyramid of King Zoser. Continue to one of the Mastabas (tombs) built nearby, and visit ones such as those of Ptah-Hotep, Mereruca, Idut or Ti. Enjoy lunch before heading back to the pier to join the ship for the rest of your sailing. Note: Shoulders and knees must be covered and shoes must be removed while visiting the mosque. Visitors must go through two security check points before visiting the Cairo Museum. During the Sound and Light show, use of video cameras requires a fee of approximately $6.00. All meals and overnight accommodations are included. This tour involves approximately 2 miles of walking with uneven and gravel surfaces at the Pyramids and Sakkara sites. There are approximately 20 steps to negotiate to reach the Citadel. Guests with breathing problems, heart problems and/or claustrophobia are not recommended to visit inside the Pyramids.

Wonderful!
This was one of the most enjoyable tours we have ever taken on a Norweigian Cruise. We were a little daunted by the length of the drive from Alexandria to Cairo, but our guide made it informative on the way down and let us relax and sleep on the way back!
First, I think the quality of the guide on this tour is the most important factor in whether or not you will have a great experience, and we hit the guide lottery on this one! She shared her love of her country, heritage, and culture with us in a uniquely personal way.
The first day we received a Muslim cultural experience in the Alabaster Mosque/Citadel. After the long drive, this was a slower-paced walk through a beautiful, picturesque site.
On to the hotel, right at the foot of the Pyramids of Giza! We appreciated the 2 hours for a leisurely lunch, a chance to freshen up, and then off to a light show at Giza. Initially, it sounded sort of "hokey", but it was a beautiful experience, just enough to get you excited about the next day's sites. The river cruise on the Nile was relaxing, entertaining, and fun.
Early rising the next day for breakfast, then a long day of seeing monuments, culminating with plenty of time on the Giza plataeu.
We did have a stop at the end of shopping, although if you were more patient than I the aggressive vendors at the site had a large variety of souvenirs.
My only criticism would be the food. While it was okay for a buffet style, I wish it would have had a few more "local-style" selections for those of us with an adventurous heart.

This was the best tour we have done. We saw the mosque, pyramids, the Sphinx, went to the laser light show and enjoyed a Nile dinner cruise and that was just the first day. Unfortunately due to protests in Cairo we could not go to the Cairo Museum but that was unaviodable. The only down side was that we did not eat lunch until late in the afternoon (although snacks were provided). Our accommodation was 5 star and our guide Dr Maha was a wealth of knowledge. This tour was worth every cent.

This was a wonderful tour! Our tour guide Hanna was terrific- very knowledgeable. We enjoyed all the sights, and felt very safe. We were able to get our dream picture of us on a camel in front of the pyramids! However, I didn't feel we had enough time at the pyramids- we weren't able to get right next to them (at least in our group). I would have preferred less time at the other sights that morning, so we would have had more time at the pyramids. But other than that, nothing but positive thoughts about this excursion!

Best Ever
I have been on 7 cruises with NCL, and over 30 different tours and this is now rated #1. This price scares you but it is worth it for sure. The sites are a once in a life time, the city of Cairo is a cultural experience, so much humanity, animals on the street, traffic, it is a different world.
The food was good, guide was great too. Those of you worried about the safety, don't.
Never felt any uneasiness, out side of fighting off people selling junk. The people were acturally very friendly, probably starved for tourism to return.
Again, unbelievable tour, go for it!!!

A definite trip
Totally agree with rest of reviews. Guide was wonderful, hotel top notched. Tours were memorable. I got goose bumps touching the pyramids. Traffic in Cairo was tough but entertaining. How often do you sit in traffic with a pick up truck full of camels next to you. Vendors at sites were aggressive and goods inferior. Selections ordered on bus were good and reasonable. Little time for shopping at better shops. But trip was worth every cent.
